6 Simple Self-Care Hacks For Women
PARISMITA GOSWAMI
When you hear the classic term self-care, the first thing that comes to mind is enjoying a wonderful full-body spa/ therapy. Or becoming self-centered or selfish.
But isn’t self-care more than relinquishing an exotic spa or becoming self-indulgent?
According to Google Trends, since 2015, the number of searches for “self-care” has more than doubled. And I am pretty sure you have heard the term self-care a lot since then.
Self-care is more than pampering yourself if you consider it an all-around aspect of well-being. The holistic definition is taking charge of your mind, body, spirit, and finances. Self-care is all about taking one step at a time to nurture your physical, spiritual, and emotional wellness to the best of your abilities.
According to Paula Gill Lopez, Ph.D., an associate professor, and chair of the department of psychological and educational consultation at Fairfield University, the need for self-care is obvious. “We have an epidemic of anxiety and depression,” she says. “Everybody feels it.”
Why do you need more self-care than ever?
The World Health Organization defines self-care as: “the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and to cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider.”
Women go through a lot of physical changes since puberty. Then comes the age of 21-17, full stress related to studies, jobs, and marriage. After that comes pregnancy, and with that comes postpartum depression—menopause, last but not least.
“Loving yourself isn’t vanity. It’s sanity.”— Katrina Mayer
Women’s life is not restricted to that tension, anxiety, depression, and whatnot. Everything comes to an edge from balancing home life, work-life, and personal care. And, therefore timely care is a must for every woman, be it a working woman or a housewife.
For every woman, self-care is a matter of now or never; it is about taking the steering wheels of your own life. Take charge of your body, check in with yourself and ask how you’re doing and what your body, mind, and spirit are asking for.
