“There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish.” – Michelle Obama
Two Assamese women entrepreneurs shining as the pioneers of change, on a global stage, is a news every Assamese & Indians are proud of. Rita Kakati-Shah and Sanghamitra Kalita have been nominated as finalists in Crain’s New York Business Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion Awards.
S. Mitra Kalita, erstwhile Senior Vice President at CNN, is the women who launched Epicenter-NYC, a newsletter to help and serve communities of colour desperate for information amidst the pandemic.
Reports say that the publication, since January 2021, has helped nearly 15,000 New Yorkers – mostly people of colour – gain access to vaccines – by hosting livestreams and appearing on the Brian Lehrer Show on WNYC weekly to discuss access and answer caller’s questions.
Rita Kakati-Shah, on the other hand, is the founder and CEO of Uma Group, a diversity and inclusion consultancy with clients across countries.

Uma, under Rita’s leadership, has led diversity and inclusion training for more than 20,000 employees, individuals and students worldwide. Earlier this year, Kakati-Shah was honoured with the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award from President Joe Biden, in recognition of her efforts to volunteer, mentor and serve her local (New York) and global community.
Both these prolific women congratulating, comforting and rooting for one another shows the bond they, being an Assamese share, and proves that women working together – linked, informed and educated – can bring peace, equality and prosperity to this forsaken world.
The team of Mahabahu – A big shout-out to these women, the real go-getters – the agents of Change!
