TONOY CHAKRABORTY
Pathsala, Assam, December 27, 2025 – In a powerful demonstration of institutional commitment to combating climate change, the Bajali District Administration, in partnership with the Mahabahu Climate Forum (MCF), concluded a transformative Climate Change Awareness Programme on December 27, 2025. The centrepiece event at the venerable Bajali Higher Secondary School in Pathsala was complemented by simultaneous “special classes” in eight additional schools across the district, reaching hundreds and hundreds of students and igniting a grassroots movement for environmental stewardship.
The flagship session at Bajali Higher Secondary School, gracefully anchored by Sri Hemanga Talukdar among more than 500 students, a dedicated subject teacher whose eloquent and engaging presentation set an inspiring tone throughout the day, featured Sri Mahendra Kumar Yadava, IFS (Retired), Special Chief Secretary for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of Assam, as Chief Guest and “Teacher of the Day.” A distinguished conservationist with illustrious tenure as Head of Forest Force and former Director of Kaziranga National Park, Yadava delivered a comprehensive discourse on climate dynamics.
He meticulously unpacked the drivers of extreme weather-storms, erratic rainfall, escalating CO₂ emissions, black carbon, glacial retreat, and the carbon implications of materials like cement, marble tiles, and red bricks-while advocating vigorously for afforestation, wetland preservation, and the elimination of single-use plastics. Students from Bajali Higher Secondary School, Pathsala Senior Secondary School, Pathsala High School, KKH Senior Secondary School, Pathsala Shikshapith, Siksha Tirtha attended the orientation programme on Climate Change in Bajali HS School auditorium.
Yadava spotlighted Assam’s bold conservation efforts, including eviction drives reclaiming over 1.5 lakh bighas of encroached land since 2021 for potential green corridors. An invigorating question-and-answer exchange with students underscored their intellectual vigour, earning Yadava’s commendation for their role as tomorrow’s guardians of the planet. In a forward-looking gesture, he announced the installation of a Weather Monitoring/Testing Centre at the school for experiential learning as Bajali is pioneering in many things including Climate Change related education, awareness, initiatives by the District Administration, Mahabahu Climate Forum and the sholl is completed 100 years- a long journey indeed.

Aligning the programme with the institution’s forthcoming centenary in January 2026, Yadava pledged sustained collaboration to render the campus a paragon of sustainability, while forecasting the advent of eco-friendly green energy as fossil fuels wane. Sri Yadava praised the District Administration and Mahabahu Climate Forum for the bold steps taken in the Bajali District.
Special Guest Sri Mridul Kumar Das, District Commissioner of Bajali, framed climate mitigation as a shared societal imperative, cautioning against over-reliance on governmental intervention. He implored students to commit to modest yet impactful behavioural shifts-curtailing air conditioning, conserving electricity, and shunning plastics-while championing awareness on ecological harmony. Das delineated the district’s multifaceted campaign, encompassing the December 27 outreach across nine schools, facilitated by senior administrators:
- Paka Sariha HS School (Sri Twahir Alam, ACS, ADC)
- Patacharkuchi Vidyapith HS School (Smt Basabi Thakuria, ACS, ADC)
- Pathsala Senior Secondary School (Dr Sonashree Brahma, ACS, ADC)
- Dakshin Bajali HS School (Smt Upasana Dutta, ACS, ADC)
- Madhya Bajali Senior Secondary School (Sri Samujjal Jyoti Gogoi, ACS, Assistant Commissioner)
- Bhawanipur HS School (Smt Pinkey Debnath, ACS, Assistant Commissioner)
- Baghmara HS School (Smt Mary Kalita, ACS, Assistant Commissioner)
- Kharadhara Kalimandir HS School (Sri Gwmbwr Ramchiary, AFS, FAO)
He further revealed plans for an inter-departmental district-level climate competition, with the Education Department and Forest Department with Administration and Mahabahu Climate Forum as key associates.
The programme’s seamless execution owed much to the tireless efforts of Assistant Commissioner Sri Asfaque Laskar, whose meticulous coordination ensured logistical precision and impactful delivery.
This initiative builds upon a seminal six-day workshop on “Climate Action and Environmental Leadership” convened from July 15-20, 2025, under the guidance of internationally renowned activist Sri Rituraj Phukan, Convenor of Mahabahu Climate Forum. Featuring luminaries such as Bhattadev University Vice Chancellor Prof Dhanpati Deka and environmentalist Dr Anowaruddin Choudhury, it galvanised stakeholders toward resilience.
Subsequently, monthly special classes on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays were institutionalised across higher secondary schools, inaugurated by DC Das himself on October 11, 2025, at Bajali Higher Secondary School. Notable sessions followed, including those by Dr Karuna Mohan Sarma and Cabinet Minister Sri Ranjeet Kumar Dass.

Sri Anjan Sarma, from Mahabahu Climate Forum, Editor MAHABAHU and an alumnus of the school-echoing the legacy of his father, freedom fighter Arjun Chandra Sarma, who was also a student of the same school-heralded the occasion as inaugurating a “new era” consonant with the centenary. Lauding DC Das’s proactive synergy, Sarma spotlighted the Forum’s milestones: an MoU with Bhattadev University in October 2025 launching the Green Campus Programme in Northeast India, in alliance with The Climate Reality Project; extensions to colleges like Nirmal Haloi and BBK; and the publication of Climate Justice 101: Empowering Community Leadership, India’s seminal educational text on the subject which is for the benefit o the students.

The proceedings, inaugurated by Principal Sri Ranjan Chakraborty‘s warm welcome-extolling the school’s dynamic leadership and centennial synergy-culminated in a poignant gesture: representatives from the Forest Department presented sports equipment, including badminton sets, cricket bats, footballs, and volleyballs, to Principal Chakraborty, fostering holistic student development alongside environmental consciousness. Other forest department officials present: Sri T C Ranjith Indian Forest Service, DFO, Rangia Division. Dr C Ramesh, Indian Forest Service , Director, Manas National Park, Assam. Sri Sunny Choudhury , Indian Forest Service, Conservator of Forest, Assam. Sri Bitupan Hazarika, AES Inspector of Schools, BDC, Barpeta ; Sri Niranjan Ojah. District Education Officer of Barpeta.

Amid Assam’s escalating vulnerabilities-erratic monsoons, biodiversity erosion, and flood-drought cycles-this Bajali model exemplifies enlightened governance. By nurturing Climate Ambassadors and forging academic-civic alliances, the District Administration and Mahabahu Climate Forum are forging a cadre of informed, empowered youth poised to steer the region toward resilience, equity, and ecological renewal on a global scale.
