December 15: “Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, the first environmental scientist in the world, emphasized the importance of ecological balance by stating that all living beings are creations of God and should be treated with respect and care. If we follow his teachings, we wouldn’t be facing the challenges of global warming today,” said Ranjeet Kumar Dass, the Cabinet Minister of Assam.
The Minister was speaking as the chief guest at the “Climate Change Awareness Programme” organized by the Bajali District Administration in collaboration with Mahabahu Climate Forum at Anundoram Borooah Academy, Pathsala today. The programme aimed to educate students about climate change and its impact on the environment. The Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining ecological balance and cited examples of how human activities are disrupting the natural balance. He stressed that the future of humanity is at risk if we don’t take immediate action to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Participating in the event, Mridul Kumar Das, District Commissioner of Bajali, said that mitigating climate change is a collective responsibility and that individuals cannot solely rely on the government to take action. He emphasized the need for individuals to take an active role in protecting the environment and to make conscious decisions to reduce their carbon footprint.
The District Commissioner urged the students to take a pledge to use air conditioners less, not waste electricity, and minimize the use of plastic. He urged the students to take an active role in protecting the environment and to spread awareness about the importance of ecological balance. He also highlighted the district administration’s efforts to raise awareness about climate change. He said that in collaboration with Mahabahu Climate Forum, Bajali District Administration has been organizing various programs to raise awareness about climate change, with a special focus on students. As part of this initiative, a five-day workshop was conducted, and some students were appointed as Climate Ambassadors from each school to train their peers on climate change awareness.
Additionally, the administration has planned to conduct workshops on environmental awareness in various schools, with officials delivering lectures on every second and fourth Saturday. The District Commissioner, Mridul Kumar Das, mentioned that lectures have already been delivered at Bajali Higher Secondary School, Baghmara Higher Secondary School, and Anandaram Borooah Academy, featuring experts such as himself, retired professor Dr. Karunamohan Sarma, and local MLA and Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Dr. Ranjit Deka, Rector cum Managing Director of Anundoram Borooah Academy, Niranjon Ojha, District Education Officer of Barpeta, retired professor Nipendra Nath Das etc.
They praised the Bajali District Administration’s initiative to promote environmental awareness among students. The programme is part of a series of events organized by the Bajali District Administration under the leadership of Mridul Kumar Das, the District Commissioner of Bajali, to raise awareness about climate change and its impact on the environment.
