BBK College Becomes Second Institution to Join Green Campus Programme: Rooted in Tradition, Reaching for Sustainability

In the verdant heart of Assam, where the whispers of ancient cultural legacies mingle with the aspirations of modern education, Mahabahu Climate Forum has etched a new chapter in climate action. On this momentous occasion, Baosi Banikanta Kakati (BBK) College emerges as the second institution to embrace the Green Campus Programme (GCP), a visionary joint initiative spearheaded by the Climate Reality Project, Mahabahu Climate Forum, and Bhattadev University. This landmark development, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Bhattadev University and the Mahabahu Climate Forum under the auspices of the Climate Reality Project, India & South Asia-led by the esteemed Mr. Aditya Pundir-heralds a new era of sustainable practices in higher education.

Nestled amid the lush expanse of emerald paddy fields and the tranquil serenity of rural landscapes, BBK College embodies the essence of a ‘Gurukulashram’-a sanctuary of learning far removed from the cacophony of urban life. Located just 12 kilometers from the bustling town of Barpeta, this institution has long been a beacon for the youth of lower Assam, drawing them into its fold with a promise of holistic development. Founded on July 25, 1971, in the Nagaon area of the greater Baosi locality, the college owes its inception to the unwavering vision of Late Mahendra Mohan Choudhury, a revered freedom fighter, former Chief Minister of Assam, and erstwhile Governor of Punjab. His tireless efforts transformed a dream into reality, creating an educational haven that honors the region’s rich heritage.
The name “Baosi Banikanta Kakati” is a poetic confluence of history and homage. ‘Baosi’ evokes the sacred ground where Vaishnavite preachers like Mahapurush Srimanta Shankardeva, his disciple Mahapurush Madhabdeva, along with Damodardev and Haridev, once fostered diverse cultural and religious activities. In the late 19th century, this land was further graced by Dr. Banikanta Kakati, a luminary son of Assam renowned as a scholar, linguist, literary critic, and academician of unparalleled repute. Thus, the college’s nomenclature pays tribute to both the timeless spirit of Baosi and the intellectual legacy of Dr. Kakati, weaving a tapestry of cultural reverence and scholarly pursuit.
Over the past five decades, BBK College has steadfastly upheld its commitment to academic rigor and community upliftment. As a predominantly rural institution, it places paramount importance on addressing the educational needs of the local populace, ensuring that higher learning remains accessible and relevant. Celebrating its 48th year of excellence in 2019-and continuing to thrive thereafter-the college has become a preferred destination for aspiring students, blending contemporary educational imperatives with an emphasis on all-round student development. Today, it serves approximately 1,500 learners across the faculties of Arts, Science, and Computer Applications, offering programs at both Higher Secondary and Undergraduate levels.

Despite navigating various challenges and resource constraints, BBK College has relentlessly pursued its goal of becoming a centre of quality and distinction. This dedication was aptly recognised when the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) awarded it a B++ grade in its second cycle of evaluation. The pinnacle of its academic achievements shines through in the accomplishments of its students, such as Ms Gitika Talukdar, who secured the first position in the state in the Higher Secondary Final Examination (Arts) in 2010, and Ms Kangkana Talukdar, who claimed the ninth position in the same examination in 2012. These milestones underscore the institution’s prowess in nurturing talent and fostering intellectual growth.

BBK College’s ethos extends beyond the classroom, embracing social responsibility with open arms. Recognising the socio-economic barriers faced by many, the college extends stipends to students from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), minority communities, and those hailing from remote areas. This inclusive approach not only alleviates financial burdens but also prioritises the holistic welfare, intellectual, and academic advancement of its student body. Complementing these efforts are two dedicated RCC hostels-one for boys and one for girls-offering a homely environment conducive to focused study. A spacious, modern library further enhances the learning ecosystem, providing resources that propel students toward excellence.

Guided by its inspiring motto, “SEARCH FOR TALENT AND ITS NURTURING,” BBK College views itself as a custodian of potential, accountable to both its students and the broader society. The institution’s idyllic surroundings-a symphony of natural beauty with verdant fields and unspoiled vistas-serve as a living testament to its intrinsic connection with the environment. It is this very harmony with nature that positions BBK College as an ideal vanguard for the Green Campus Programme.
The Green Campus Programme represents a bold stride toward sustainability, aiming to integrate eco-friendly practices into the fabric of educational institutions. Under the leadership of Principal Dr Pradip Das, whose unwavering support has been instrumental in this initiative, BBK College has enthusiastically stepped forward. Dr Das has appointed Mr Aminur Rahman as the dedicated coordinator for GCP, ensuring seamless implementation and oversight.
To drive the program forward, a specialised GCP committee has been constituted, comprising seven expert teachers specialising in key domains: air quality, biodiversity, waste management, water management, and energy management. This multidisciplinary team will orchestrate a series of engaging activities designed to raise awareness among students, empowering them to become active participants in environmental conservation.
Envisioned activities under GCP will span interactive workshops, hands-on projects, and awareness campaigns tailored to each domain. Students will explore strategies for monitoring and improving air quality, conduct biodiversity audits of the campus’s rich natural surroundings, devise innovative waste reduction techniques, implement water conservation measures, and promote energy-efficient practices.
These initiatives not only align with global sustainability goals but also resonate with the college’s rural roots, where the interdependence of human life and nature is palpably evident. By fostering a culture of environmental mindfulness, BBK College aims to inspire its community to adopt lifelong habits that contribute to planetary well-being.
As BBK College embarks on this green journey, it looks forward with optimism and resolve. The partnership with the Climate Reality Project, Mahabahu Climate Forum, and Bhattadev University, under the guidance of Mr Aditya Pundir, promises to amplify the impact of these efforts, potentially serving as a model for other institutions across India and South Asia.
In an era where climate change poses existential challenges, BBK College’s commitment to the Green Campus Programme exemplifies how education can be a catalyst for positive change. By nurturing talent while safeguarding the environment, this flagship institution continues to honour its heritage, illuminate the present, and illuminate a sustainable future for generations to come.
