However, building a sovereign AI ecosystem in India is not without challenges. Developing large AI models requires massive computational resources. High performance chips and advanced data centres are expensive. India must invest heavily in infrastructure to compete with global leaders. There is also a need for large and high quality datasets in multiple languages. Collecting, cleaning, and labelling such data is a complex task.
Another challenge is talent. While India has a large pool of engineers and data scientists, cutting edge AI research requires specialized expertise. Retaining talent within the country can be difficult due to global competition. There are also concerns about ethical governance. AI systems must be transparent, accountable, and aligned with democratic values. Building regulatory frameworks that encourage innovation while protecting citizens is not easy.
