Chomsky does not give an exact answer “yes or no”!!
Irina Mirochni
I would like to comment on the interview of the American left intellectual Noam Chomsky toMeduzaabout the situation in #Ukraine.
Chomsky‘s key thesis, which touches on an urgent practical problem – the supply of Western #weapons to Ukraine – is as follows:
“But those who give weapons to Ukraine must understand that the lives of not only Ukrainians, but also of everyone else are at stake. The West should remember that the weapons it supplies to Ukraine are capable of bringing the whole world to the brink of such a war, in which not only Ukraine itself, but the whole world will be destroyed.”
Chomsky does not give an exact answer “yes or no” to the question about the supply of weapons to Ukraine, he “problematizes”.
But it is obvious that the general attitude of the intellectual is critical. Since it puts Chomsky’s priceless life on the line, what if #Putin slams a #nuclear bomb on her.
From the point of view of philistine vulgarity, this thesis is not without meaning. Indeed, who wants to risk their lives for some strangers in distant Ukraine. But since when has such a position become leftist, “internationalist”, “alternative”? And Chomsky obviously sticks to himself precisely these epithets.
After all, the main component of the collectivist worldview is to overcome one’s own fear and self-preservation instinct for the sake of helping comrades, those who are faced with violence and need support.
All leftist practices – anti-fascism, feminism, and a whole host of others – are built around this principle.
But Noam Chomsky, when it comes to Ukraine, suggests that we abandon it and live by the rule of “every man for himself.”
He sees in the participants in the Ukrainian resistance not comrades in need of immediate practical solidarity, but a group of people whose lives and well-being should be weighed by the utilitarian in relation to their own interests and risks.
How such a “left alternative” differs from the cannibalism that prevails in the capitalist world is not clear.
Western assistance to the Ukrainian resistance does not mean that now it is necessary to choose bourgeois democracy as the desired political model or to abandon the struggle in the countries of Europe and North America.
But it must be recognized that the outcome of the armed struggle in Ukraine, the partisan resistance in Belarus and Russia, is of decisive importance for the realization of the revolutionary perspective and the development of the international community.
As well as for simple human happiness and well-being of ordinary people, Ukrainians, Belarusians, residents of Russia.
From all those who consider themselves radical left, we have the right to demand solidarity in relation to our struggle.
Demand to follow the principles, not count the costs.
