Two decades after An Inconvenient Truth awakened millions to the climate crisis, the debate continues between urgency and skepticism. Bjorn Lomborg’s recent Newsweek essay (May 24, 2026) argues that many of Al Gore’s warnings were overstated, disaster deaths have plummeted, and humanity should focus more on adaptation and innovation than aggressive emissions cuts. His piece is calm, data-selective, and reassuring. But for those who live along the Brahmaputra valley and in the Eastern Himalayas, it feels profoundly distant from the river we know.
The climate debate has entered a dangerous new phase. On one side stand scientists, environmental activists, Indigenous communities, and vulnerable nations warning that humanity is approaching ecological tipping points. On the other side are influential intellectuals and policy commentators arguing that climate fears are exaggerated, that economic growth matters more than emissions reduction, and that adaptation alone can largely protect humanity from climate catastrophe.
In May 2026, Bjorn Lomborg reignited this debate through an article questioning the legacy of Al Gore and his landmark documentary An Inconvenient Truth. Lomborg argued that many climate predictions have failed, that disaster deaths have declined dramatically, and that the world is becoming wealthier despite climate change. He suggested that alarmism has distorted climate policy and that humanity should focus more on innovation and adaptation rather than aggressive emissions reduction.
For people living in climate-vulnerable regions such as Assam, Northeast India, and the Eastern Himalaya, however, this debate is not theoretical. It is deeply personal.

In these regions, climate change is not a distant academic disagreement. It is visible in collapsing riverbanks, disappearing forests, melting glaciers, catastrophic floods, erratic rainfall, biodiversity loss, agricultural instability, and the displacement of vulnerable communities. The Indigenous peoples of Northeast India, who historically contributed almost nothing to global carbon emissions, now stand among the frontline victims of a crisis created largely by industrialized economies.
This is why the climate conversation cannot be reduced to statistics alone.

Lomborg’s article makes one central argument repeatedly: humanity has become safer despite climate change. He points out that deaths from climate-related disasters have fallen dramatically over the last century. On the surface, this claim is factually correct. Better infrastructure, improved forecasting systems, stronger healthcare networks, emergency response mechanisms, and technological advancements have indeed reduced mortality from floods, storms, and droughts.
But this argument is profoundly incomplete.
Climate change cannot be measured merely through death counts.
Millions of people today survive climate disasters only to face homelessness, food insecurity, loss of livelihood, psychological trauma, displacement, debt, ecological destruction, and long-term economic instability. Reduced mortality does not mean reduced suffering.
In Assam alone, annual floods continue devastating communities along the Brahmaputra River basin. Entire villages disappear due to riverbank erosion. Farmers lose crops repeatedly. Indigenous communities living in ecologically fragile areas are forced into cycles of displacement and poverty. Children lose education opportunities. Families lose ancestral land. Biodiversity-rich ecosystems are collapsing under mounting climatic pressure.

These realities rarely appear in simplistic economic calculations.
The Eastern Himalaya, one of the most climate-sensitive regions in the world, is warming faster than many other regions globally. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, glaciers across the Himalayan region are retreating at alarming rates. This threatens freshwater systems that sustain hundreds of millions of people across South Asia.
Scientists have repeatedly warned that the “Third Pole” – the Himalayan region – faces severe ecological instability due to global warming. Rising temperatures are increasing the frequency of glacial lake outburst floods, erratic monsoons, landslides, and biodiversity loss.
For Assam and Northeast India, the implications are existential.
Lomborg also argues that hurricanes and wildfires are not worsening in the catastrophic ways climate campaigners predicted decades ago. Here again, the argument depends heavily on selective framing.
Climate science does not claim that every weather event everywhere increases uniformly. Rather, it explains that warming intensifies climate instability and increases the probability and severity of many extreme events. According to the World Meteorological Organization and the IPCC, extreme heatwaves, heavy rainfall events, prolonged droughts, and severe flooding are already becoming more frequent and intense in many regions due to anthropogenic warming.

The issue is not whether every hurricane season breaks records.
The issue is that climate systems are becoming increasingly unstable and unpredictable.

In India, heatwaves have intensified dramatically in recent years. Urban flooding events are becoming more destructive. Cyclones in the Bay of Bengal are growing more intense. Rainfall patterns across Northeast India are shifting unpredictably. Scientific evidence increasingly shows that warmer atmospheric conditions hold more moisture, leading to heavier rainfall extremes and devastating flood events.
Similarly, Lomborg points to declining global wildfire area statistics. Yet many scientists caution that such global averages can obscure severe regional crises. Massive fires in Canada, Australia, the Amazon, California, Siberia, and the Mediterranean have exposed how rising temperatures and prolonged drought conditions can create unprecedented wildfire risks.
Climate impacts are unevenly distributed.
That is precisely why climate justice matters.
The climate crisis disproportionately harms those least responsible for causing it. Small island nations face existential threats from rising sea levels. African countries confront droughts and food insecurity despite contributing minimally to global emissions. Indigenous communities across the world are losing ecosystems that sustained them for generations.
This includes the Indigenous peoples of Assam and Northeast India.
Traditional communities in the region historically lived through low-carbon lifestyles deeply connected to forests, rivers, biodiversity, and ecological balance. Yet they now face escalating climate vulnerability created largely by industrial emissions elsewhere.
This moral imbalance lies at the heart of the global climate justice movement championed by organizations such as The Climate Reality Project founded by Al Gore.
Lomborg further argues that renewable energy transitions are too expensive and unreliable. He points to the intermittency of solar and wind energy, emphasizing the continuing dependence on fossil fuel backup systems.
There is some truth here as well.
Renewable energy systems do face storage and grid integration challenges. Developing economies require affordable and reliable electricity. Energy transitions are technologically and politically complex.

But acknowledging these challenges does not justify slowing climate action.
In reality, renewable technologies have advanced far faster than many skeptics predicted. Solar and wind costs have fallen dramatically over the past decade. Battery storage technologies continue improving rapidly. Investments in green hydrogen, advanced nuclear, grid modernization, and decentralized renewable systems are accelerating worldwide.
More importantly, fossil fuels themselves impose enormous hidden costs through pollution, ecological destruction, health crises, and climate damages.
According to the World Health Organization, air pollution linked largely to fossil fuel combustion contributes to millions of premature deaths annually. Climate-driven disasters already generate hundreds of billions of dollars in economic losses every year.
The argument that humanity can simply adapt indefinitely also overlooks physical limits.
There are temperatures beyond which outdoor labor becomes dangerous. There are drought thresholds beyond which agriculture collapses. There are sea-level rise scenarios that threaten entire coastal regions. There are ecological tipping points from which recovery may become impossible.
Adaptation is essential, but adaptation alone is not enough.

Mitigation – reducing greenhouse gas emissions – remains critical to avoiding catastrophic future warming.
This is why global climate agreements under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement remain indispensable despite political frustrations and implementation gaps.
The scientific consensus remains overwhelmingly clear: human activities are driving dangerous climate change.
According to NASA, Earth has already warmed approximately 1.1 degrees Celsius since the pre-industrial era. Polar ice loss is accelerating. Ocean temperatures continue reaching record highs. Sea levels are rising faster than expected. Several climate impacts are unfolding more rapidly than earlier projections suggested.
Some changes may remain irreversible for centuries.
This is not alarmism. It is scientific assessment.
And yet, perhaps the most important dimension of the climate struggle today is psychological.

Climate skepticism narratives often create paralysis by suggesting that the problem is exaggerated, inevitable, or economically impossible to solve. Conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza have intensified fossil fuel dependence, damaged ecosystems, and diverted political attention away from climate action. Environmental experts have warned that military emissions remain dangerously underreported globally.
At the same time, climate-induced displacement, water scarcity, agricultural stress, and resource competition threaten to intensify future conflicts worldwide.

Climate change acts as a “threat multiplier.”
For Assam and Northeast India, this interconnected reality carries urgent significance. The region sits at the crossroads of ecological fragility, geopolitical sensitivity, biodiversity richness, and socioeconomic vulnerability.
Protecting the Eastern Himalaya is not merely a regional issue. It is a planetary necessity.
This is why local climate initiatives, youth movements, Indigenous environmental stewardship, and regional forums such as the Mahabahu Climate Forum carry growing importance. They connect local realities to global climate discourse while empowering communities to participate in solutions rather than despair.
Ultimately, the debate between climate urgency and climate skepticism should not distract humanity from the core truth emerging across science, ecology, and lived experience:
The climate crisis is real. It is already reshaping societies. And its impacts are deeply unequal.
The people of Assam, Northeast India, and the Eastern Himalaya do not need abstract theories to understand this reality. They witness it every monsoon, every flood season, every landslide, every drought, and every disappearing ecosystem.
The task before humanity is not to choose between economic development and climate action. The real challenge is building a future where development itself becomes sustainable, equitable, resilient, and ecologically just.
That future will require science, Indigenous wisdom, innovation, international cooperation, political courage, and above all, collective moral responsibility.
The warning signs are no longer distant.
They are already flowing through the rivers of Assam, melting across the Himalayas, burning through forests, and rising through the oceans of the world.
