A new phase of resistance against the Taliban has emerged in Badakhshan, the Strategic province which has a border with China, Pakistan and Tajikistan. In the last week, fighting were reported in at least four districts of this province.

In 1990s Haji Bashir had millions dollar drug business. By the summer of 1994 Haji Bashir called a large meeting to which he invited various people including Mullah Omar, Mullah Burjan, and Mullah Malarbani. The attending were furious with the toll collectors. “Let’s get rid of those bastards”, shouted one. “We are tired of being their slaves”, called another. Haji Bashir said he is ready to provide weapons and financial means.

In the middle of the meeting, Mullah Omar was selected as the head of the Hujra students (Taliban). Haji Bashir agreed to fund the entire Hijra students with the money and resources he gets from drugs. Mohammad Isa, Haji Bashir’s deputy, told Betti Dam If Haji Bashir was not there and if there was no drug mafia, there would be no Taliban.
