The United Nations Climate Change Conference COP28 is poised to begin today in Dubai, issuing a resounding call to accelerate collective climate action.

Against the backdrop of the hottest year ever recorded and the unprecedented impacts of the climate crisis, the conference aims to address and rectify the trajectory of climate commitments worldwide.

Critical Juncture for Global Commitments

Scheduled from November 30 to December 12, 2023, COP28 in Dubai holds significant importance as a decisive moment for global leaders to act on climate commitments and avert the worst consequences of climate change. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is taking the lead in COP28, with Dr. Sultan Al Jaber serving as this year’s president.

Assessment through the Global Stocktake

COP28 marks the conclusion of the “global stocktake,” offering the first comprehensive assessment of global progress in implementing the 2015 Paris Agreement. The findings paint a concerning picture – the world is falling short of limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C by the end of the century. Central to this transformation is climate finance. Urgent measures such as replenishing the Green Climate Fund, doubling financial resources for adaptation, and operationalizing the loss and damage fund are deemed imperative to maintain the 1.5°C goal and ensure inclusivity in the approach.

The World Climate Action Summit (WCAS), hosted by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, will convene Heads of State or Government on December 1-2.
