Covid-19 Crisis: Is the New JN.1 Variant Deadly? Shocking FAQs Revealed as Thane Reports Deaths and Cases Surge!

TONOY CHAKRABORTY

With one Covid-19 death reported in Thane and infections mounting across various states in India, a pressing question arises: How serious is the new JN.1 variant of the coronavirus?
As of May 24, Thane has recorded 18 active Covid-19 patients, while Kerala reports 273 cases, and Karnataka has 35, including 32 in Bengaluru. Delhi registered 23 new cases, with others emerging in Hyderabad and Noida.
The situation is mirrored in Southeast Asia, where countries like Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, and China have also seen a surge in Covid-19 cases.

The JN.1 variant, a subvariant of the Omicron lineage BA.2.86, is primarily linked to the rise in infections. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified it as a “variant of interest,” though it does not raise significant concern at this time.
In Singapore, the primary variants causing infections are JN.1’s descendants, LF.7 and NB.1.8, which collectively account for over two-thirds of locally sequenced cases.
Health officials in Delhi are urging the public not to panic regarding the JN.1 variant. Medical professionals report that the strain is “not severe,” with most patients experiencing mild symptoms. While it spreads rapidly, experts emphasize that serious illness is rare. In Delhi, all 23 reported cases are showing mild symptoms and are under home quarantine.
Dr. Dhruv Chauhan, spokesperson for the Indian Medical Association’s Junior Doctors Network, reassures the public: “This is not a lethal variant,” he stated. He advocates for continued precautions, such as maintaining hand hygiene and wearing masks in crowded places. Dr. Chauhan also highlighted the dangers of panic, suggesting that fear can lead to more health issues than the disease itself.
Meanwhile, Dr. Aviral Mathur from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital noted the strain’s high transmissibility but reassured that symptoms remain primarily mild. Additional caution was advised by Meenu Singh, Director of AIIMS Rishikesh, who stated that while JN.1 is not highly harmful, vigilance is necessary.
As Covid-19 cases increase, health experts stress the importance of prevention. Wearing a well-fitted mask in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces is crucial, ensuring it covers the nose, mouth, and chin. Regular hand hygiene is essential-using hand sanitizer or washing hands frequently.
Health guidelines recommend covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, disposing of tissues properly, and regularly cleaning hands. Travelers are advised to avoid non-essential trips if feeling unwell, and keeping vaccinations-including booster doses-up to date is highly recommended.
While the JN.1 variant has caused a spike in cases, the consensus among health professionals is that it is manageable with proper precautions. The focus should be on remaining informed and vigilant without succumbing to fear.
