SURJYA & SUDARSHAN: Pioneering a Carbon-Free DEROI Tea Revolution from Assam!

In the verdant landscapes of Assam, a region famous for its rich tea heritage, a new revolution is brewing—one that is as much about sustainability as it is about taste.

Deroi Tea, a brand founded in 2017 by two innovative engineers, is not only changing the way tea is processed but also making significant contributions to the global fight against climate change.

By spearheading carbon-free tea manufacturing, Deroi Tea is reshaping the future of the tea industry while addressing critical environmental and health issues, from carbon emissions to climate justice.

A Vision for Climate Action: Carbon-Free Tea Manufacturing

At a time when the world is grappling with the urgent challenges of climate change and global warming, Deroi Tea stands out as a beacon of hope. The tea industry has long relied on coal and gas for drying and processing tea, contributing significantly to carbon emissions and worsening the global climate crisis. These traditional methods not only harm the environment but also pose health risks to tea workers and consumers, with the release of harmful gases and residues.

Enter Surjya Borthakur and Sudarshan Deka, two young entrepreneurs from Assam who saw the need for change. With a shared background in engineering, they developed a groundbreaking solution: a patent-pending process that uses electricity, instead of carbon-based fuels, to power the tea drying and steaming process. By eliminating coal and gas, Deroi Tea is cutting down on the carbon footprint associated with tea production and setting a new global standard for eco-friendly practices.

“We knew that the tea industry had to evolve,” said Deka. “The world is facing a climate emergency, and it was clear that we couldn’t keep using methods that harmed the environment. That’s why we focused on developing a carbon-free tea manufacturing process. It’s not just about producing tea—it’s about producing tea that’s good for the planet.”

The Health Benefits of a Clean Tea Revolution

Deroi Tea’s innovative carbon-free process doesn’t just benefit the environment; it also improves the quality of the tea itself. Without the use of coal and gas, Deroi Tea’s green and orthodox black teas are cleaner, healthier, and free from harmful residues. This makes them particularly appealing to health-conscious consumers, who are increasingly seeking natural, pure alternatives to mass-market brands.

“Tea is a staple of everyday life,” said Borthakur. “But it shouldn’t come at the cost of our health or the environment. By using electricity and clean energy sources in our production process, we ensure that our tea is not only premium in quality but also safe for consumption.”

This focus on health and sustainability has resonated with consumers around the world. At the International Trade Fair in New Delhi in 2022, Deroi Tea’s products sold out in just 10 days, marking the brand’s successful entry into the competitive tea market.

The success of their green tea, in particular, highlights the growing demand for products that align with the principles of both personal well-being and environmental responsibility.

A Local Brand with Global Impact: Climate Change and Climate Justice

The climate crisis is a global challenge, but its impacts are often felt most acutely by vulnerable communities in regions like Assam, where agriculture and tea production form the backbone of the local economy. Rising temperatures, erratic weather patterns, and unpredictable rainfall are already disrupting tea cultivation, threatening the livelihoods of small-scale farmers and workers across the region.

Deroi Tea is doing its part to address this urgent problem. By pioneering carbon-free tea manufacturing, the company is not only reducing its own emissions but also contributing to broader climate justice efforts.

Climate justice, a concept that calls for equitable solutions to the climate crisis, recognizes that the most marginalized communities—those who contribute least to global emissions—are often the hardest hit by its effects. Deroi Tea’s efforts are aligned with this principle, as the brand works to create a more sustainable and just future for both Assam’s tea industry and the world at large.

“We see ourselves as part of a global movement towards climate justice,” explained Deka. “By reducing our carbon emissions, we’re doing our part to protect the environment and ensure that future generations can continue to produce and enjoy tea in a way that’s both sustainable and fair.”

Tackling Global Warming and Carbon Emissions One Cup at a Time

Global warming, driven by excessive carbon emissions, is already altering the natural systems that sustain agriculture. Tea production is particularly vulnerable to changes in temperature and rainfall, making it imperative for the industry to adopt more sustainable practices. Deroi Tea’s carbon-free process serves as a model for how the industry can reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and mitigate the effects of climate change.

As global temperatures rise, the effects on Assam’s tea gardens could be devastating. Changing weather patterns could reduce yields, affect the quality of the tea, and disrupt the lives of the millions of people who depend on tea cultivation for their livelihoods. By leading the charge toward carbon-negative production, Deroi Tea is demonstrating that it is possible to fight climate change while continuing to produce world-class tea.

“Climate change is the defining issue of our time,” said Borthakur. “If we want to continue enjoying the natural resources that have sustained us for generations, we need to act now. At Deroi Tea, we’re proud to be part of the solution.”

Praise for Young Entrepreneurs Leading the Way

The success of Deroi Tea is not just a testament to innovation and sustainability—it’s a story of the power of young entrepreneurship. In a region steeped in tradition, Sudarshan Deka and Surjya Borthakur dared to think differently. Their vision and persistence have resulted in a breakthrough that not only benefits Assam but also holds global significance.

Through their hard work and dedication, these young entrepreneurs have shown that it’s possible to blend tradition with modern technology to create a product that is both sustainable and superior in quality. Their pioneering efforts have been recognized by industry leaders, and Deroi Tea is quickly becoming a symbol of the new generation’s role in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges.

A Future Rooted in Sustainability and Global Impact

Looking to the future, Deroi Tea has ambitious plans. The brand is focused on scaling up its production to meet growing global demand, while also exploring new international markets. At the same time, the company remains committed to enhancing its carbon-negative production model, ensuring that it continues to set new standards for sustainability in the tea industry.

As the world continues to grapple with the twin crises of climate change and global health, Deroi Tea offers a hopeful example of what can be achieved when young minds apply their ingenuity to solving real-world problems. Their story is a reminder that innovation, when paired with a commitment to the greater good, can spark revolutions that benefit both people and the planet.

By redefining tea production, Deroi Tea is not only contributing to the fight against global warming but also offering a model for industries worldwide to adopt more sustainable practices. As they continue to brew their carbon-free revolution, Deroi Tea inspires us all to reimagine the future of tea—and the future of our planet.
