In a historic musical evening titled “Echoes from Russia”, the Saint Joseph Church of the Jesuit Fathers in Monot, Beirut, hosted an unprecedented cultural event marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in World War II.
For the first time in Lebanon, the Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra performed under the baton of Maestro Alexander Sladkovsky—one of the world’s most acclaimed conductors—alongside internationally renowned cellist Sergey Slovachevsky.

Organized under the patronage of Hiba Al Kawas, President of the Lebanese National Higher Conservatory of Music, and the Russian Ambassador to Lebanon, H.E. Alexander Rudakov, the concert featured a repertoire of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s masterpieces.
In her opening address, Hiba Al Kawas emphasized music as a unifying force beyond politics and division, calling the evening “a metaphysical offering—a spiritual communion born from harmony and hope.” Ambassador Rudakov expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Conservatory and welcomed Maestro Sladkovsky with pride, celebrating his contribution to Russian and global music.
Maestro Sladkovsky’s commanding yet poetic presence on the podium infused the performance with a unique energy that transcended the typical concert experience, transforming it into an immersive sonic journey that enveloped the audience in a rich tapestry of sound. His ability to seamlessly blend authority with sensitivity allowed for a dynamic interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s works, drawing out the emotional nuances that make these compositions so beloved.
The orchestra, under his guidance, delivered a deeply moving and technically masterful rendition, capturing the essence of Tchaikovsky’s intricate harmonies and sweeping melodies with precision and passion.
Particularly noteworthy were the cello solos performed by Sergey Slovachevsky, whose artistry shone brightly throughout the evening. In pieces such as Pezzo Capriccioso and Variations on a Rococo Theme, Slovachevsky captivated the audience not only with his remarkable virtuosity but also with an emotional depth that resonated deeply within the concert hall.
Each note he played seemed to tell a story, weaving a narrative that held the listeners spellbound. His ability to convey a wide range of feelings—from the exuberance of joyous themes to the poignant introspection of more melancholic passages—added a profound layer to the overall performance.
The synergy between Slovachevsky and the orchestra created moments of breathtaking beauty, leaving the audience in awe and marking the evening as a memorable celebration of Tchaikovsky’s genius.
The program culminated in a breathtaking rendition of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, a musical symbol of triumph and resilience. The concert reaffirmed the vital role of classical music in bridging cultures and celebrating shared human heritage.
