Gaza’s Humanitarian Crisis Deepens Amidst Ongoing Conflict!
UN Agencies Issue Urgent Calls for Support as Violence and Displacement Worsen

Gaza stands as a testament to relentless conflict and human suffering, with the region enduring nearly nine months of unyielding warfare.
The humanitarian crisis has reached unprecedented levels, marked by widespread destruction, severe shortages of essential supplies, and the breakdown of basic services. As international organizations and the United Nations scramble to provide relief, the situation on the ground remains dire, with calls for immediate action and sustained support growing louder.
Devastating Impact on Gaza’s Population: Gaza is currently described as a “world of devastation,” a term that barely encapsulates the extreme conditions faced by its residents.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the ongoing conflict has severely disrupted daily life, leaving the population deprived of basic necessities such as food, shelter, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities. Pregnant women are forced into preterm C-sections due to the constant threat of violence, and the entire population is grappling with the loss of their means of survival.
Alarming Shortages and Health Crisis: One of the most pressing issues is the critical shortage of essential supplies. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has highlighted a severe lack of milk, baby formula, and nutritional supplements, particularly affecting children and pregnant or breastfeeding women. Signs of malnutrition are evident among children, yet the limited capacity for nutrition screenings means many are left untreated.
Antenatal and postnatal care services are minimal, with some displacement sites offering medical services for only a few hours each day, without adequate medical supplies. Emergency deliveries are reportedly occurring in tents without professional medical assistance, underscoring the dire health crisis.
Displacement and Overcrowding: In Rafah, the southernmost governorate, continuous fighting and bombardment have forced massive displacements. Estimates by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) indicate that only about 65,000 people remain in an area that previously hosted 1.4 million residents. These displaced individuals are living in overcrowded, makeshift shelters and tents that offer no protection from the extreme summer heat.
Fuel and Aid Challenges: Fuel shortages exacerbate the crisis, with only sporadic deliveries since early June. Carl Skau, WFP’s Deputy Executive Director, described the situation as a “public health and protection disaster,” noting that one million displaced individuals in southern Gaza are trapped without access to clean water or sanitation facilities. Despite some improvements in aid deliveries in northern Gaza, transporting lifesaving relief remains challenging, with UN staff facing long waits at checkpoints and frequent missile strikes.
Medical Evacuations and Health Services: The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported significant difficulties in accessing the last operational hospitals in Gaza. Dr. Rik Peeperkorn from WHO highlighted the troubling increase in low birthweight and preterm babies, a consequence of the prolonged conflict.
Approximately 10,000 patients now require specialist treatment outside Gaza, including those with chronic diseases and severe mental health conditions. The closure of the Rafah crossing and increased fighting have further complicated medical evacuations, leaving many without necessary care.
UNRWA Faces Imminent Collapse Without Immediate Funding: UNRWA, the main UN agency responsible for Palestinian refugees, is on the brink of collapse without immediate financial support. Philippe Lazzarini, UNRWA’s Commissioner-General, issued a stark warning, emphasizing that the agency is “staggering under the weight of relentless attacks in Gaza.”
Over 193 UNRWA personnel have been killed since Hamas-led attacks and subsequent Israeli bombardment began. More than 180 UNRWA installations have been damaged or destroyed, and at least 500 people have been killed seeking protection under the UN flag.
“Our premises have been used for military purposes by Israel, Hamas, and other Palestinian armed groups,” Lazzarini explained. “Our convoys have come under attack despite coordinated movement with Israeli authorities in the West Bank…operational space is shrinking.”
The Plight of Gaza’s Children: Children in Gaza are among the most severely affected. Over 625,000 children are deeply traumatized, living in rubble without access to education. Before the war, nearly 300,000 children were enrolled in almost 290 UNRWA schools. Now, those out of school are at risk of violence, exploitation, child labor, early marriage, and recruitment by armed groups.
Lazzarini warned that without decisive intervention to resume education, “we will condemn an entire generation to poverty and sow the seeds of hatred, resentment, and future conflict.”
West Bank and Regional Tensions: The crisis extends beyond Gaza. In the occupied West Bank, daily attacks by Israeli settlers, military incursions, and the destruction of homes and critical infrastructure have created a well-oiled system of segregation and oppression. Since October, some 500 Palestinians have been killed. The situation is equally tense on the Israel-Lebanon border, where intensifying clashes threaten a “full-blown war,” further complicating the region’s stability.
The International Community’s Response: The international community’s response to Gaza’s crisis has been inadequate. Despite UNRWA’s urgent appeal for $1.2 billion to cover critical humanitarian needs until the end of the year, the appeal is only 18 percent funded. The UN continues to call for an immediate ceasefire and safe, sustained access to deliver life-saving aid.
Humanitarian and Human Rights Concerns: The UN rights chief, Volker Türk, condemned the relentless attacks on Gaza, highlighting the immense death and suffering. Over 120,000 people in Gaza, overwhelmingly women and children, have been killed or injured since October. The escalation of operations in Rafah since early May has displaced almost one million Palestinians.
“There has been unconscionable death and suffering,” Türk told Member States. He also warned of the dramatically deteriorating situation in the occupied West Bank and expressed concern over the potential for a full-scale war between Lebanon and Israel, with ongoing rocket exchanges causing casualties and displacements.
The Call for Immediate Action: The UN continues to push for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and safe, sustained access to deliver aid. The WFP warned that southern Gaza could soon see catastrophic hunger levels, similar to those previously recorded in the north. Carl Skau stressed the importance of supporting local markets and providing cash assistance to help people rebuild their lives. While emergency aid is critical, efforts must also focus on restoring dignity and supporting sustainable livelihoods.
Gaza’s humanitarian crisis is a glaring symbol of the devastating impact of prolonged conflict. The severe shortages of essentials, the collapse of health services, and the widespread displacement have created a dire situation that requires immediate international intervention.
The UN and humanitarian agencies continue to call for urgent action to provide relief, restore order, and protect the most vulnerable, particularly children and women. The international community must prioritize humanitarian relief and work towards a peaceful resolution to end the cycle of violence and suffering in Gaza.
