From Humble Seeds to a Thriving Oak: A Legacy of Dedication

30 July 1979: 52 pioneering students -28 boys and 24 girls – walked into makeshift classrooms with nothing but dreams. Born as Pragjyoti College through the untiring efforts of visionaries like Late Dr. Homeswar Deva Choudhury, Late Prof. Rajani Kanta Sarma, and Late Umesh Chandra Deva Choudhury, and nurtured by the historic Pracchya Sangha, the college began without buildings or salaries for teachers. Yet, under founder Principal Late Krishna Goswami, that tiny spark became a blazing torch.

Today, on 6 green acres and affiliated to Bhattadev University, the college proudly educates over 1966 students in Arts and Commerce streams. From the first B.A. batch in 1985 to B.Com (Major) in 2017, from NAAC Grade B (2016) to full UGC recognition, every milestone echoes the motto: “Progress is the activity of today and assurance for tomorrow.”

On 1 December 2025, renowned climate activist and Mahabahu Climate Forum convenor Rituraj Phukan – celebrated globally for his expeditions to Antarctica and the Arctic, and his lifelong advocacy blending indigenous wisdom with modern climate science – visited the campus along with Nilim Kashyap Barthakur. Together, they laid the foundation for transformative initiatives:

Rainwater harvesting, Zero-waste systems, Solar energy, biodiversity conservation.

• groundbreaking Climate Justice & Climate Action courses – the first of their kind in the entire Northeast.
