Green Campus Revolution in Assam: How Bhattadev University is Shaping Youth-Led Climate Resilience?
Building a Green Future: How Campuses are Becoming Climate Leadership Hubs in Northeast India

In the green heart of Assam, where the mighty Brahmaputra flows and ancient forests echo tales of resilience, a quiet yet powerful transformation is underway at Bhattadev University and its affiliated colleges. The Green Campus Programme (GCP), an initiative of The Climate Reality Project, is turning educational institutions into vibrant models of sustainability and youth-led climate action. Anchored by the MAHABAHU CLIMATE FORUM (MCF), this movement is empowering young minds to move beyond classroom learning and become active stewards of the environment.

The journey began on 9 September 2025 at Bhattadev University in Bajali, Pathsala, with the formal launch of the Green Campus Programme in Northeast India. A landmark Principals’ Conclave followed on 9–10 October 2025, bringing together around 20 principals and vice-principals from Bhattadev University and its affiliated colleges.
The event featured inspiring addresses by Dr. Dhanapati Deka, Vice Chancellor of Bhattadev University; Mridul Kumar Das, District Commissioner of Bajali District; and a keynote by Aditya Pundir, Director of The Climate Project Foundation (India & South Asia). The conclave culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between MAHABAHU CLIMATE FORUM and Bhattadev University, laying a strong institutional foundation for campus-level climate action.

Nirmal Haloi College became the first institution in Assam to register under the GCP, soon followed by Baosi Banikanta Kakati (BBK) College and G.L. Choudhury College, marking the early momentum of the programme.
At its core, the Green Campus Programme aims to transform colleges into living laboratories of environmental responsibility. It promotes water and biodiversity conservation, energy efficiency, scientific waste management, and the integration of climate education into campus life. Through student-led Green Campus Committees, participating institutions undertake practical actions such as plantation drives, waste-to-wealth projects, awareness campaigns, and eco-audits. In the ecologically fragile context of Assam and the Eastern Himalayas, these efforts directly address pressing local challenges like recurrent flooding, deforestation, and biodiversity loss, while contributing to global climate goals.

The Mahabahu Climate Forum, under the broader Mahabahu platform, serves as the dynamic regional coordinator. By connecting media, academia, governance, and youth, MCF tailors climate solutions to the unique cultural and ecological realities of Northeast India. Through persistent outreach, workshops, and on-ground support, the forum has steadily expanded the programme’s footprint.

By March 2026, the initiative had reached 20 colleges under Bhattadev University. That month proved particularly fruitful: Mahabahu Climate Forum teams personally visited eight colleges, guiding them through the registration process and helping establish dedicated Green Campus Committees comprising students, faculty, and administrators. Six new colleges successfully registered, bringing the total number of active participants to 12.

To commemorate World Forest Day (21 March) and World Water Day (22 March), MCF organised an inter-college essay competition open to students across Bhattadev University-affiliated institutions. The response was encouraging, with 31 thoughtful essays submitted on themes of water conservation, forest preservation, and climate resilience – reflecting the growing environmental consciousness among the youth.

These milestones signify a deeper shift: from awareness to action. Students are now auditing campus waste, planning green infrastructure, conserving resources, and extending awareness to their communities. In a region as biodiverse yet climate-vulnerable as Assam, these green campuses are emerging as beacons of hope and resilience.

The programme exemplifies effective collaboration between educational institutions, civil society organisations like Mahabahu Climate Forum, and global partners such as The Climate Reality Project. It is nurturing a new generation of graduates who are not only academically proficient but also deeply committed to sustainability.

Looking ahead, the vision is ambitious yet achievable: to build a robust network of environmentally responsible institutions across Assam and the wider Northeast. Planned activities include capacity-building workshops for newly formed committees, collaborative biodiversity projects, larger events celebrating local ecology, and the sharing of success stories to inspire more colleges to join.

With guidance from leaders including Aditya Pundir, Anjan Sarma, Rituraj Phukan, and Dr. Amruta Deshmukh, along with the dedicated efforts of Mahabahu Climate Forum, the foundation for lasting impact is strong.

As the Green Campus Programme continues to flourish under Bhattadev University, it stands as a shining example of what collective will and youthful energy can achieve. From its inspiring launch to the vibrant momentum of March 2026, the initiative reminds us that climate action begins where we learn, live, and lead.

This journey, still in its early chapters, reaffirms a powerful truth: when education fully embraces environmental responsibility, it can transform not just campuses, but entire communities and future generations.
