Happy Independence Day, Ukraine
Dr Shoshana Suleimanova
For me, this day is never only about a date on the calendar. It is about roots, resilience, and the unbreakable thread between past and future.
Ukraine has been my home since the earliest steps of my life. My father devoted his life to agriculture, cultivating wheat and building a business that exported Ukrainian grain to the world.
I still remember the scent of harvest, the rhythm of combines in golden fields, and the quiet pride of knowing that our grain, warmed by our hands, became bread for families far beyond our borders. That is what Ukraine has always been: a land that nourishes, creates, and gives.
Ukraine also gave me my voice and my path. I earned my Ph.D. in Law, became an Associate Professor at a leading Ukrainian university, and worked on legal reforms that shaped how businesses and courts functioned in a transforming country. I taught future lawyers to think critically, to connect legal rules with human dignity, and to believe that law is not only a system of codes but also a bridge to opportunity.
Today I write from Tel Aviv, where I am building my future as a legal professional in Israel. I work on cross-border transactions in M&A, venture capital, and strategic corporate matters. Israel is my heart. It is where I continue to grow, connect legal systems, and support innovation. But Ukraine is my soul. It is the rhythm of my steps, the strength of my language, and the courage I carry forward every day.
Independence is not only a political status. It is a daily choice made by millions of Ukrainians: soldiers, doctors, teachers, entrepreneurs, and parents. Despite risk and loss, they keep building, creating, and defending. It is a spirit of resilience and reinvention that inspires the world.
On this Independence Day, I want to thank everyone around the globe who has stood with Ukraine — with words, with deeds, with solidarity. You are part of this bridge we are building between nations.
Because Ukraine is not just a place on the map. It is an idea. Freedom is never given. It is earned, defended, and passed forward.
With love, with gratitude, and with an unshakable belief in the future, I carry Ukraine’s colors proudly wherever I go.
