KAKALI DAS

Extreme heavy rains since Monday (13th June, 2022) night – Guwahati is witnessing a natural disaster in the form of landslides as well as heavy rainfall. Unfortunately, four people have already lost their lives in the landslide that took place in Guwahati. They were buried alive.
All of them were said to be labourers living at the spot there, and until now four construction workers have been recovered in Guwahati where this landslide that has been triggered by incessant rainfall in Guwahati occurred.
It is being said that at around 1.30 AM this incident occurred in the West Boragaon area of Guwahati, and the workers who worked in the unorganised sectors were said to be buried alive while they were asleep.
The district administration has issued an alert for the people who are going out of their homes to be extremely careful, and not go out in the landslide affected areas as well as the flood prone areas.

Most parts of the city are waterlogged. Many people were marooned inside their homes as roads were inundated with water. Several areas in Guwahati under knee-deep water. Affected areas include Guwahati’s Last Gate, Downtown, Satgaon, Noonmati Sector 1, Nabin Nagar, Anil Nagar etc. The Meteorological Department (MD) warned of light to moderate rainfall at most places in the Northeast region until the 17th June.
Vehicles are submerged in water in Guwahati’s Anil Nagar and local commute is at a complete standstill. It has become difficult for people to commute in these areas. The district administration has issued toll-free numbers for the assistance of the people for the emergency help.

There is not only waterlogging, but also flash floods caused due to water coming in from the rivulets. This alert is for three days and Guwahati city is experiencing massive water logging already. In fact, there is no electricity in the areas which are most affected.
Also given the fact, that the State Government has only already issued advisory to people to stay indoors until and unless there is a necessity to step out. The state government has also taken help of NDRF personnel, who are trying to get into the affected areas, particularly to rescue people out of their homes.

Besides, this isn’t the first time that the people of Guwahati have been suffering from flash floods. It has become a mundane problem of the city, and a part of the lives of people residing in these flash flood-prone areas.
