How the Iran Conflict is Triggering an LPG Shortage in India

The escalating conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which has now entered its second week as of mid-March 2026, has sent shockwaves through global energy markets, with India emerging as one of the most immediately vulnerable nations due to its heavy reliance on imported liquefied petroleum gas for everyday cooking needs. This war has effectively disrupted shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which approximately eighty to ninety per cent of India’s LPG imports have traditionally flowed from major Gulf suppliers such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait.
How the Iran Conflict is Triggering an LPG Shortage in India

As tankers carrying essential fuel cargoes remain stranded near the strait and exports from the region have virtually dried up, the country faces an acute shortage of this vital cooking fuel, prompting urgent government interventions and widespread disruptions across households and commercial establishments alike. India, as the world’s second-largest importer of LPG after China, consumes around thirty-one to thirty-three million metric tons annually, with imports accounting for sixty to eighty-five percent of total supply depending on the year, and the sudden constriction in these flows has exposed the fragility of the nation’s energy security framework that has long depended on stable Middle Eastern supplies.

At the heart of the crisis lies the government’s swift decision to prioritise domestic consumers over commercial users in a bid to safeguard the subsidised LPG connections that support hundreds of millions of Indian households under flagship welfare schemes. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has invoked emergency powers, including provisions under the Essential Commodities Act, to direct refiners to maximise domestic LPG production and divert as much output as possible toward household cylinders.

How Long Can India Survive on Its 100 Million Barrel Oil Reserve as Iran Closes the Strait of Hormuz?

This move has led to a formal suspension or severe restriction on the distribution of non-domestic or commercial LPG cylinders, which are larger nineteen-kilogram units primarily used by hotels, restaurants, eateries, bakeries, and other food service businesses. Oil marketing companies such as Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum have been instructed to halt or delay supplies to these sectors, channelling available stocks instead to the approximately three hundred thirty million households that depend on LPG as their primary cooking fuel.

In response to fears of hoarding and black marketing, authorities have also extended the minimum booking interval for household LPG refills from the standard twenty-one days to twenty-five days nationwide, a regulatory adjustment designed to stretch existing inventories while preventing panic-driven overconsumption.

The price adjustments that accompanied these supply measures have further compounded the burden on ordinary citizens and businesses. For the first time in nearly a year, the cost of a standard fourteen-point-two-kilogram domestic LPG cylinder in major markets like Delhi has risen by seven percent to nine hundred thirteen rupees, reflecting the surge in global benchmark prices triggered by the conflict. Commercial cylinders have seen an even steeper increase, climbing from one thousand seven hundred sixty-eight rupees and fifty paise to one thousand eight hundred eighty-three rupees for the nineteen-kilogram variety used predominantly in the hospitality sector.

These hikes, implemented uniformly by state-owned refiners, aim to offset the elevated import costs and encourage conservation, yet they arrive at a time when many families are already grappling with inflationary pressures on essential goods. Households across the country are now effectively regulated to adhere strictly to the new twenty-five-day booking cycle, with distributors instructed to monitor and limit allocations to prevent any single consumer from drawing more than the allotted quota in a given period. Any attempt to circumvent these rules through unauthorised channels risks penalties under the Essential Commodities Act, underscoring the government’s determination to maintain equitable distribution amid scarcity.

How the Iran Conflict is Triggering an LPG Shortage in India

Nowhere is the LPG shortage manifesting more visibly and disruptively than in India’s vast restaurant and hospitality industry, where commercial LPG serves as the backbone of daily operations for millions of establishments. With ninety percent of the country’s restaurants and hotels relying exclusively on these cylinders to power their kitchens, the abrupt curtailment of supplies has triggered immediate operational crises in key urban centres.

In Bengaluru, hoteliers report receiving only one cylinder per day instead of the usual three, forcing many to ration fuel and contemplate menu reductions or temporary closures within days. Similar scenes are unfolding in Mumbai, where delays in refill bookings have stretched to two to eight days for commercial users, and in Chennai, where associations estimate that nearly ten thousand small and medium-sized eateries could shutter by the middle of the week if refills do not resume.

Will the US-Israel-Iran War and Iran’s Gulf Attacks Trigger a Major Crisis for India’s Oil, Trade, and Economy?

Industry leaders from the National Restaurant Association of India and regional bodies such as the Bangalore Hotels Association and AHAR in Mumbai have warned that without intervention, widespread shutdowns will follow, leading to significant job losses in a sector that employs over eight million people and generates trillions of rupees in annual turnover. Many establishments have already begun exploring costly alternatives such as electric induction stoves, coal-fired ovens, or even wood-based cooking, yet these shifts not only inflate operational expenses but also compromise the speed and consistency that define Indian cuisine in commercial settings.

The ripple effects on restaurants extend far beyond individual closures, threatening the entire food ecosystem and the daily lives of urban consumers who depend on affordable dining options. In cities like Kolkata and Pune, bakeries and even crematoriums have been instructed to curtail LPG usage, with some facilities in Pune temporarily shutting down portions of their operations to conserve fuel for higher-priority needs.

Hotel owners in these regions describe a scenario where supplies are now contingent on incoming shipments, leaving businesses in limbo and prompting urgent appeals to local authorities for exemptions. The National Restaurant Association has formally requested that the hospitality sector be declared an essential service, arguing that the inability to operate kitchens directly affects students, medical professionals, and working professionals who rely on outside meals.

If the shortage persists beyond the current two-to-three-week buffer held by refiners and distributors, experts predict a sharp rise in food prices as surviving eateries pass on higher costs or reduce portion sizes and operating hours. For the average citizen, this translates to fewer affordable dining choices, longer queues at remaining outlets, and a broader push toward home cooking, which in turn increases pressure on household LPG quotas already stretched by the extended booking regulations.

Looking ahead, the consequences of this LPG crunch could deepen if the West Asian conflict prolongs or intensifies, as India possesses limited stockpiles and alternative import routes remain underdeveloped in the short term. Domestic production from refineries covers only about forty-one percent of demand under normal conditions, and even with the emergency ramp-up ordered by the government, full self-sufficiency is years away.

States with high urban density and heavy commercial LPG consumption, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, are expected to bear the brunt initially, while rural areas and smaller towns may experience milder disruptions due to lower reliance on restaurants. A high-level committee comprising executive directors from the major oil marketing companies has been constituted to review special requests for commercial LPG allocations from hotels, restaurants, and other industries, meaning business owners must now submit formal applications with justifications for any resumed supplies, adding layers of bureaucratic oversight to an already strained system. Consumers, both household and commercial, are implicitly regulated to exercise restraint, with public advisories urging minimal usage and exploration of alternatives such as piped natural gas in cities where available or energy-efficient appliances to reduce overall dependence.

LPG Cylinder

Broader economic and social ramifications are already emerging as the shortage intersects with other vulnerabilities in the energy chain. Fertiliser manufacturers, which depend on natural gas as feedstock, have signalled potential production cuts that could affect the upcoming planting season for major cereals, while the ceramic and tile industry in hubs like Morbi faces the prospect of month-long shutdowns due to halted propane deliveries.

For ordinary Indians, particularly in lower-income brackets who benefited from subsidised connections expanded under successive government schemes, the price increase and booking delays represent a subtle but significant erosion of affordability, potentially forcing some families to revert to traditional fuels like biomass or kerosene despite their health and environmental drawbacks.

The hospitality sector’s distress, meanwhile, threatens to cascade into reduced tourism revenues and supply chain disruptions for food producers and suppliers who cater to restaurants. Analysts caution that if global supplies do not normalise soon, India may need to accelerate diversification efforts by sourcing LPG from farther afield, such as the United States or West African nations, though logistical challenges and higher freight costs could keep prices elevated for months.

In this challenging landscape, the Indian government continues to balance immediate crisis management with long-term strategic planning, emphasising that overall gas supplies are not critically short but require careful rationing to protect the most vulnerable. The formation of review panels and the invocation of emergency legislation reflect a proactive stance aimed at preventing black markets and ensuring that the subsidised domestic sector remains insulated. Yet the situation underscores the urgent need for greater investment in domestic exploration, renewable energy integration, and diversified import partnerships to shield the nation from geopolitical shocks in the future.

As restaurants across major cities grapple with dwindling stocks and households adjust to stricter booking norms, the LPG shortage serves as a stark reminder of India’s intertwined energy fate with global events unfolding thousands of kilometres away. Families are encouraged to monitor official distributor notifications for any updates on supply restoration, while commercial operators must navigate the new approval processes or temporarily scale back services to weather the storm.

Ultimately, the coming weeks will test the resilience of both policymakers and citizens alike, as the country navigates this unprecedented convergence of international conflict and domestic fuel constraints with the hope that diplomatic resolutions or alternative sourcing can restore normalcy before deeper economic scars form.

The hospitality industry, in particular, stands at a crossroads, where sustained shortages could lead not only to temporary closures but to structural shifts in how Indians dine out, potentially reshaping urban food culture for years if the crisis lingers. Through coordinated efforts between government, industry, and consumers, India aims to mitigate the worst outcomes, yet the path forward demands vigilance, adaptation, and a renewed commitment to energy independence in an increasingly volatile world.
