Human-Wildlife Conflict in Ganderbal, Kashmir: Causes, Impacts, and Sustainable Solutions

District Ganderbal in central Kashmir is known for its beautiful forests, mountains, rivers and rich biodiversity. The natural landscapes are home to many wildlife species, like the Himalayan black bear, rhesus macaque, porcupine and wild boar. But for the people living near forest areas, sharing the landscape with wildlife has become increasingly difficult. Human-wildlife conflict has become one of the most serious environmental and social problems in the district impacting on biodiversity conservation and rural livelihoods.
Human–wildlife conflict occurs when interactions between people and wild animals result in negative impacts on humans or wildlife. Conflicts are on the rise worldwide as forests shrink, natural habitats become fragmented and human settlements encroach on wildlife areas. When animals are deprived of food and shelter within forests, they tend to shift to adjacent villages and agricultural fields, in search of resources.
The situation is becoming common in Ganderbal district where many villages are located near forest boundaries. Farmers report crop damage, livestock losses, and occasional injuries to people from wildlife. At the same time, animals are also facing the threat of habitat degradation and increased human activities.

To understand the nature of this problem, a field based study was conducted in eleven villages of five tehsils of District Ganderbal. These villages included Manigam, Gutlibagh, Urpash, Nunner Kowbagh, Sumbal Bala, Baroosa, Manasbal, Benhama, Lar, Shallabugh and Kurhama. The villages were selected based on their closeness to forests and history of repeated human–wildlife conflict incidents.

The study employed a multistage sampling technique. A total of 332 households were interviewed using structured questionnaires that had both open-ended and closed-ended questions. Field visits, photographs of crop damage and conflict sites, and interviews with Forest Department officials were also conducted to cross-check the information collected from the local communities.
The findings showed that the Himalayan black bear is the most reported species involved in conflict. Gutlibagh, Urpash and Manigam reported highest incidents of bears. Farmers reported damage to crops, attacks on livestock and several cases of injuries to humans. During the harvesting season, bears are often drawn to maize fields and orchards, increasing encounters with people.

Rhesus macaques were another major contributor to damage of the crops. Villages including Gutlibagh, Baroosa and Sumbal Bala have witnessed repeated raids by monkeys on maize fields, vegetable gardens and fruit orchards. Unlike most other wild animals, monkeys often come back several times a day, making it hard for farmers to protect their crops.
Porcupines caused considerable damage to cultivated fields by eating underground crops and maize. Shallabugh, Manigam and Nunner Kowbagh suffered heavy losses. Wild boars, notably in Shallabugh and Kurhama, have emerged as a new problem for local farmers, as they destroyed standing crops overnight.

One farmer from Gutlibagh said the main problem is that we cannot leave our fields unattended during the harvest season.We spend nights guarding our crops because a single visit by Monkeys and bears can destroy months of hard work.
A farmer from Sumbal bala said, “Monkeys are found in groups. So even if we shoo them away, they come back after a while. Every year, a part of our harvest is lost.
Another resident from Manigam added, “Wildlife has always been part of our surroundings, but now these encounters have become much more frequent than before.”

The study also noted several traditional ways villagers use to reduce conflict. Farmers protect their fields with barbed-wire fences, thorny bushes, wooden logs, guard dogs, night patrols, watchtowers, torches, kerosene lamps, drums, shouting and sling shots. Some communities also work together to protect neighboring farms at harvest time.
A crucial finding of the study is the role of traditional ecological knowledge. Most villagers can detect the presence of wildlife through the abnormal barking of dogs, the restlessness of livestock, fresh footprints, claw marks on trees, and alarm calls of birds. These observations give communities the ability to predict wildlife movement before conflicts happen.

The study recommends incorporating this traditional knowledge with modern early warning systems such as WhatsApp groups, SMS alerts, GPS tracking of wildlife, camera traps, motion-sensor lights and community volunteer monitoring teams. These measures can improve communication between local communities and the Forest Department and reduce risks to people and wildlife.

Human-wildlife conflict is not just a wildlife problem. It is inherently tied to rural livelihoods, food security and biodiversity conservation. To address this, there is a need for stronger community participation, timely compensation to affected farmers, restoration of habitats, awareness programmes and better monitoring of wildlife movement.
Protecting wildlife and supporting local communities should go hand in hand. By combining scientific research, traditional knowledge, and effective government support, Ganderbal can move towards a future where people and wildlife coexist more peacefully.
