The porous nature of the border has been exploited by various insurgent groups, exacerbating security threats in India’s northeastern states.

Additionally, concerns have been raised about the infiltration of undocumented immigrants and the smuggling of narcotics and arms across the border. In light of these challenges, the Indian government has recognized the need to enhance border security and curb illicit activities along the India-Myanmar frontier.

The ambitious plan to fence the entire India-Myanmar border encompasses several key features aimed at bolstering border security and surveillance.

Firstly, it involves the construction of a physical barrier along the entire length of the border. This fence will serve as a deterrent to illegal border crossings and unauthorized activities, providing a tangible barrier to enhance security.

In addition to the physical fence, the Indian government plans to implement a Hybrid Surveillance System (HSS) along certain stretches of the border. Moreover, two pilot projects utilizing the Hybrid Surveillance System are already underway in Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur, fencing a stretch of 1 kilometer each. These projects serve as test cases for the effectiveness of the surveillance system and will inform future implementation strategies.

Additionally, fencing projects covering approximately 20 kilometers in Manipur have been approved, with work set to commence soon. These projects represent a concrete step towards realizing the vision of a secure and impenetrable border.

The decision to fence the India-Myanmar border carries significant strategic implications for India’s security posture and regional dynamics. By fortifying the border with Myanmar, India aims to significantly enhance its border security infrastructure and curb illicit activities.
