At COP16 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Shri Bhupender Yadav, Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, underscored India’s unwavering commitment to addressing land degradation and desertification. His address, delivered with both urgency and hope, emphasized that desertification is not merely an environmental issue but a significant socio-economic challenge affecting millions of lives.
Shri Yadav presented a vision of India taking a proactive leadership role on the global stage, championing sustainable solutions to combat this crisis. Central to his address was India’s ambitious pledge to restore 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030. This commitment forms part of India’s broader goal to create a more resilient and sustainable future, not just for its people but for the global community.
Among the key initiatives highlighted was the Soil Health Card program, which aims to improve agricultural productivity while promoting sustainable farming practices. The program equips farmers with detailed soil data, enabling them to make informed decisions about crop selection and nutrient management. This initiative, Shri Yadav noted, is transforming India’s agricultural landscape by reducing dependency on chemical inputs and promoting ecological balance.
India’s strategy to combat land degradation is significantly bolstered by the establishment of a Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Land Management. This initiative is designed to serve as a global hub where India’s innovative practices and extensive expertise in sustainable land management can be shared with the world.
The center will focus on developing, promoting, and disseminating effective strategies that have proven successful within India, aiming to provide valuable insights and practical solutions to other countries grappling with similar environmental challenges.
By fostering collaborative efforts with international partners, the center will facilitate knowledge exchange and capacity building, promoting a collective approach to sustainable land management.
This collaboration will not only enhance India’s leadership role in the global environmental landscape but also encourage the adoption of sustainable practices worldwide. Countries facing issues such as soil erosion, deforestation, and desertification will benefit from India’s experiences and methodologies, adapting them to their local contexts.
Furthermore, the Centre of Excellence will conduct research and pilot projects to test new ideas and approaches, ensuring that the solutions offered are both innovative and applicable across diverse geographical and climatic conditions. Workshops, training programs, and seminars will be organized to build skills and awareness among stakeholders, from government officials to local communities.
Through these comprehensive efforts, India hopes to lead by example, demonstrating the importance of sustainable land management in achieving broader environmental and economic goals. The center’s work will contribute to global efforts in mitigating land degradation, supporting the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) goals, and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to life on land and climate actio
India’s technological prowess was also showcased, with institutions like the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) playing pivotal roles in drought monitoring and early warning systems. By leveraging satellite technology, these institutions are providing timely and accurate data that helps policymakers and farmers mitigate the impacts of climate variability, particularly in vulnerable regions.
During the event, grassroots efforts were also in the spotlight. The mission of Igniting Minds Organization, which focuses on water conservation through innovative rainwater harvesting techniques and large-scale afforestation under the #GreenIndiaChallenge initiative, was lauded. The organization’s work aligns with India’s larger vision of community-driven climate action, empowering local populations to become active participants in restoring ecological balance.
This holistic approach, combining top-down government policies with bottom-up community initiatives, is a hallmark of India’s strategy. Shri Yadav’s address reflected a broader narrative of collective responsibility, emphasizing that climate action requires the participation of every sector of society.
The conversation at the India Pavilion also highlighted the role of global cooperation in addressing desertification. With India at the forefront, the world is witnessing how a nation with diverse environmental and socio-economic landscapes can pioneer innovative solutions and inspire others to follow suit.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India has set a global benchmark in climate action. The country’s vision for a sustainable and resilient future extends beyond its borders, positioning India as a key player in the global fight against land degradation and desertification.
As COP16 just started and will conclude on the 13th., the message is clear: India’s commitment to combating desertification is both bold and comprehensive. By blending traditional knowledge with cutting-edge technology and fostering global partnerships, India is paving the way for a future where land degradation is no longer a threat but a challenge overcome through unity and innovation.
Together, nations can build a world where degraded lands are transformed into thriving ecosystems, ensuring prosperity and resilience for future generations.
