International Day for Monuments and Sites or World Heritage Day celebrated on 18th April, 2023

18th April, 2023, Tuesday: Department of Anthropology, Pragjyotish College celebrated the International Day for Monuments and Sites (also known as World Heritage Day) on 18th April, 2023 by organizing a talk on ‘Cultural Heritage’ with the focus on the theme for this year “Heritage Changes”. The talk was delivered by Dr. Jonali Devi, Former Head & Associate Professor and Dean (i/c) Humanities and Social Sciences, Cotton University.
Dr. Mayuri Borkataky, Head, Department of Anthropology delivered the Welcome Speech, while Dr. Manoj Kumar Mahanta, the Principal, Pragjyotish College delivered the Inaugural Speech. Among the dignitaries present was the President, Governing Body, Pragjyotish College, Dr. Jagadindra Rai Chowdhury, who, in his speech reiterated the importance of knowing about our heritage especially for the students and preserving for posterity.

Dr. Jonali Devi emphasized on understanding, identifying and respecting our heritage while citing examples of cultural connections in Indian and global context. With a basic understanding of cultural heritage, Dr. Devi made the students aware of the threats looming over the protection and preservation of the heritage. She suggested the Department to encourage the students to participate in various programmes related to Heritage Conservation and Preservation and also to organize programmes related to spreading awareness about the Heritage around us.
The talk was attended by the faculty members of the Department of Anthropology and students from various departments of Pragjyotish College.
