International Hyena Day 2026: Respect the Laugh, Protect the Legacy

PRADAKSHINA SARMAH
On April 27,2026, the world comes together to celebrate World Hyena Day – a day devoted to recognizing and appreciating one of nature’s most fascinating yet often misunderstood animals. Hyenas have long been overshadowed by myths and negative portrayals, but in truth, they are intelligent, resilient, and plays an essential role in keeping ecosystems balanced.
Why This Day Matters?
For centuries, hyenas have been burdened with negative stereotypes. Their eerie vocalizations, often described as “laughs”, have been misinterpreted as symbols of trickery or menace. Yet scientific research reveals a different reality: hyenas are highly adaptive predators and scavengers, capable of teamwork, problem-solving, and intricate communication.
International Hyena Day seeks to dismantle these myths, encouraging people to see hyenas not as villains but as ecological guardians. By spotlighting their role in biodiversity, the day fosters respect and appreciation for their resilience.
Do you know?
- Hyenas can be found over a range in north and northeast Africa, from the Middle East to southern Siberia as well as the Indian subcontinent.
- In India, it is found in the states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, etc.
- With only four living members of their genus existing in the present times, they are among the smallest family of mammals alive, the fifth smallest to be exact.
Physical description and Appearance of Hyenas:
- Size: Length:2.3-5.4 ft (70.1-164.2cm)
- Weight:6-190lb(8-86kg)
- Teeth: They have strong teeth, providing more biting power to the jaws.
Global initiatives implemented to conserve Hyenas:
The most significant global initiative to protect hyenas in 2026 was the decision at the UN’s Convention on Migratory Species (CMS CoP15) to list the striped hyena under both Appendix I and II, granting it the highest level of international protection and requiring strict conservation measures across its range.
1.CMS CoP15 Listing (2026)
◦ The striped hyena was listed under Appendix I & II of the Convention on Migratory Species.
◦ Appendix I grants strict protection (no hunting, capture, or trade).
◦ Appendix II requires international cooperation among range states for habitat protection and monitoring.
◦ This was a landmark step, giving hyenas global recognition as a conservation priority.
2. IUCN Red List Monitoring
◦ Hyenas are assessed regularly to track population trends.
◦ The striped hyena is currently Near Threatened, with fewer than 10,000 mature individuals.
◦These assessments guide conservation funding and policy decisions worldwide.

The most common species, the Spotted Hyena, is listed as “Least Concern” by the IUCN, though their populations are declining outside protected areas due to habitat loss and conflict with humans. Other two species-Striped Hyena and Brown Hyena face higher risks.
Regional Initiatives Implemented in India:
- Habitat Corridors: Wildlife authorities have begun mapping and protecting movement corridors for striped hyenas, especially in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh, where human expansion has fragmented habitats.
- Den-Site Protection: Conservation programs are working with local communities to safeguard denning sites, often located outside protected reserves, ensuring breeding success.
- Community Engagement: NGOs and forest departments run awareness campaigns to reduce retaliatory killings. These programs emphasize the ecological role of hyenas as “nature’s clean-up crew,” helping farmers understand their value.
- Research & Monitoring: Indian researchers are expanding surveys to better estimate hyena populations, since current data is limited. This monitoring is crucial for implementing CMS obligations.
- Conflict Mitigation: Pilot projects in rural areas provide compensation schemes or alternative livestock protection methods to reduce human-hyena conflict.
Research & Education Initiatives:
- Population Surveys
◦ Ongoing efforts to gather accurate data on hyena numbers and distribution.
◦ Essential for designing effective conservation strategies.
- Public Awareness Campaigns
◦ Shifting cultural perceptions from “villains” to ecological guardians.
◦ Use of documentaries, school programs, and tourism initiatives.
- Scientific Collaboration
◦ International researchers share data on hyena ecology, genetics, and behavior.
◦ Builds a stronger foundation for conservation planning.

Conservation of hyenas combines global frameworks like CMS and IUCN, regional actions like corridors, den-site protection, conflict mitigation etc. and community-driven efforts like education, awareness, compensation schemes. Together, these initiatives aim to secure the future of hyenas by protecting habitats, reducing human conflict, and reshaping public perception.
Theme for International Hyena Day 2026
“Respect the Laugh, Protect the Legacy”
Why This Theme Matters?
- Cultural Shift:It challenges the negative portrayals of hyenas in folklore and media, replacing fear with respect.
- Conservation Focus: It highlights the urgent need for global and regional initiatives, such as the CMS listing and community-based conservation programs.
- Symbolic Power: The “laugh” becomes a metaphor for resilience, survival, and the importance of listening to nature’s voices.
Call to Action:
The theme of 2026 is a reminder that every laugh-like call echoes the need for coexistence. By respecting the laugh and protecting the legacy, we ensure that hyenas continue to thrive as vital guardians of the wild.

Honoring Hyenas, Protecting the Future
Hyenas remind us that every species has a role in maintaining the delicate balance of life. Their presence keeps ecosystems healthy, their resilience inspires us, and their survival depends on our collective action. On this day, we are called not only to celebrate them but to commit ourselves to their protection.
International Hyena Day is more than an observance; it is a pledge. A pledge to safeguard biodiversity, to challenge stereotypes, and to ensure that future generations inherit a world where the echoes of the hyena’s laugh continue to resonate across the wild landscapes, they call home.
