Are Internships the New Gateway to Employment for Graduates?

KAKALI DAS

You’ve just walked across the stage, diploma in hand. After years of hard work, late-night study sessions, and ambitious dreams, you’re finally ready to enter the workforce.
But as you scroll through job portals, reality sets in. Employers are asking for experience you don’t yet have. In today’s competitive environment, the first move for many new graduates isn’t applying for a jobs. It’s applying for an internship.
Traditionally, internships were taken up by students during their summer or winter breaks. These were short-term roles, mostly meant to give students a glimpse into the professional world.

In movies, internships might look exciting or even glamorous, but in real life, they are often unpaid and involve small tasks like printing documents or entering data. Unlike full-time jobs, internships usually don’t have clear job roles or long-term positions.
Full-time jobs offer a fixed salary, job security, and benefits like health insurance. Internships, on the other hand, don’t always offer these. However, there is one major advantage – they can help you get a full-time job in the future. Think of internships as a “test drive” for your career. They give you real-world experience and help you understand what kind of work you might enjoy.
Today, internships are becoming more than just training periods. They are turning into stepping stones for full-time jobs. A popular career website recently reported that there’s been a big increase in the number of graduates applying for internships. This rise shows that the job market is not easy for young people right now.
Take the United States for example. The job market there is slowing down. Many young people are finding it difficult to get jobs. According to official data, the youth unemployment rate (for ages 16 to 24) is about 9.4%. This means that many new graduates are unable to find work right after finishing college.
As a result, many of them are applying for internships instead of regular jobs. In fact, since the COVID-19 pandemic, the year 2024 was the most competitive year for internships in the U.S. so far.
The situation is even more difficult in China, the world’s second-largest economy. This year, around 12 million fresh graduates are entering the job market in China. But the youth unemployment rate there is much higher – 16.5%. This means that many of these graduates may not find proper jobs. They are left with two choices: either work low-paying jobs like drivers or cleaners despite their high qualifications, or apply for internships in hopes of something better.
Many choose internships, and some are even willing to pay brokers thousands of dollars just to secure one. This shows how important internships have become in today’s job market.

Big companies have noticed this trend too. For instance, Tencent Holdings, one of China’s biggest tech companies, has launched a huge internship recruitment program. They plan to offer 28,000 internship positions over the next three years.
India is facing a similar situation. Government data shows that the youth unemployment rate in India (for ages 15 to 29) is over 10%. With fewer job opportunities, more and more graduates are turning to internships. And companies are responding to this increased demand.
Between 2022 and 2025, the number of internship postings in India increased by 103%. In 2024 alone, internship opportunities went up by 25%. More fresh graduates are seeing internships as a useful way to gain experience and improve their chances of getting a permanent job.
Internships offer many benefits. They help young workers learn new skills and build professional relationships. These experiences can increase their chances of getting hired later. And while many internships are still unpaid, there are now more that offer good financial support.

Still, the overall situation remains tough. It is unclear when the global job market will improve. But if you are struggling to find a job after graduation, applying for an internship might be the best way to start your career.
In today’s competitive world, internships are no longer just a temporary step for students. They have become an important part of the job journey for graduates around the world. Whether it’s in the U.S., China, or India, young people are turning to internships to build their futures.
So if you are stuck, don’t lose hope. An internship might just be the opportunity you need to begin your professional journey.
