Assamese poet Prof Nilamani Phookan has been awarded Jnanpith Award, the highest literary award of India. On 7th December, 2021, Bharatiya Jnanpith in its website announced the 56th Jnanpith Award 2021 to Prof Nilamani Phookan and 57th Jnanpith Award 2022 to Konkani writer Damodar Mauzo. Poet Nilamani Phookan is the third Assamese recipient of this award after Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya and Indira Goswami ( Mamoni Raisom Goswami). Poet Nilamani Phookan was the professor of history in Arya Vidyapeeth College, Guwahati, retired in 1992. He has invaluable contribution towards the literature field of Assam by his modern poetry. Many of his poetry have already been translated to many languages.
