Kamal Haasan’s much-anticipated action drama, Thug Life, helmed by esteemed director Mani Ratnam, is poised for release, with its first show kicking off at 9 am on Thursday, following special show approvals from the Tamil Nadu government.

This film marks a historic reunion for Haasan and Ratnam after 37 years since their iconic collaboration on Nayakan in 1987, heightening the excitement surrounding its debut.

Set to be one of the most talked-about Indian films of the year, Thug Life will have its first-day-first-show (FDFS) commence simultaneously across the country, a notable shift from other recent Tamil films like Vijay’s Leo, which enjoyed early screenings in states without similar restrictions.

However, despite the extensive promotional blitz and overwhelming hype, the film’s advance booking figures have fallen short of expectations, lagging behind Haasan’s previous two releases.

As reported by the industry tracker Sacnilk, Thug Life had garnered Rs 4.93 crore in advance bookings by 7 pm Wednesday, with 290,838 tickets sold across 10,613 shows. Including block seat allocations, the total projections sit at Rs 12.32 crore-substantially lower than the advance totals for Haasan’s recent movies.

For context, Shankar’s Indian 2 amassed Rs 10.98 crore (Rs 17.9 crore with block seats), while Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Vikram recorded Rs 15.30 crore. Reports indicate that a ban in Karnataka is significantly impacting the film’s box office potential.

In addition to Haasan, Thug Life features a stellar cast, including Trisha Krishnan, Silambarasan TR, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, and Ali Fazal. The film boasts a soundtrack composed by Oscar-winning AR Rahman, alongside visually striking cinematography by Ravi K Chandran and adept editing by A Sreekar Prasad. The action choreography, a crucial element for an action drama, has been expertly arranged by Anbariv.
