Mahabahu has taught me patience, adaptability and resilience
Angela Chakraborty
This month, I had the opportunity to work as an intern with Mahabahu, a Digital International Journal that highlights a diverse collection of premium articles, opinions, and write-ups from writers around the globe.
As a hub for insightful and engaging content, Mahabahu offers a unique space for writers to share their perspectives on a wide range of subjects.
I chose to intern with Mahabahu to challenge myself and enhance my writing skills. Over the course of four weeks, I gained valuable experience, skills and understanding that have helped me grow both personally and professionally. In this article, I’ll share my experiences and lessons learnt from my month-long internship with Mahabahu.
Responsibilities and Tasks
I was part of a team of five interns from my university (Guwahati University). Our task was to work together on a project to gather valuable information on the startup ecosystem in Assam. Our responsibilities included meeting key figures from incubators, viz The Assam Startup Nest and STPI Guwahati and compiling and submitting the report of the collected data on startups and incubators in Assam.
We also wrote news articles based on the individual story outlines provided to us. We had to construct articles using the outlines given to us, ensuring it’s clear and easy to understand.
Lastly, each of us were assigned individual locations to conduct surveys. My designated location was the Nilachal flyover, where I surveyed local shops and vendors beneath the flyover to gather information about the impact of the construction of the flyover on their businesses, reduction of the traffic congestion and the scenario of artificial flood in the area.
Skills and Knowledge Gained
During my internship at Mahabahu, I gained a wide range of skills that have helped me grow as a person. Firstly, I improved my writing abilities and also learnt to construct engaging articles and express my ideas clearly.
It also developed my ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage my time efficiently. Additionally, I leant to work effectively with my teammates, sharing ideas and responsibilities to achieve our goals.
Moreover, while writing the articles and going through the website of Mahabahu, I came across various unknown facts which helped me widen my horizon of knowledge.
The internship also helped me improve my verbal and written communication skills as I learnt to express myself clearly and confidently. We even had the opportunity to meet and interact with many new people, including entrepreneurs and experts, expanding my professional network.
Challenges and Lessons Learnt
During my internship at Mahabahu, I faced several challenges that taught me valuable lessons. Some of them include:
- Dealing with rejection and disrespect: When a contact declined our interview request made by one of our teammates, I was taken aback by their behaviour. However, I learnt that politeness and patience are essential in professional communication. Being respectful and courteous, even in the face of rejection, is crucial.
- Overcoming physical and emotional challenges: Conducting a survey at Nilachal flyover was a challenging experience, especially since I wasn’t well that day. Moreover, some shops refused to participate, which added to the difficulty. This experience taught me two important things. First, I need to take care of my health and well-being. Second, I need to keep going even when things get tough. Additionally, I realized the importance of being aware of my surroundings and taking necessary precautions as a solo female researcher.
- Adaptability: Working with my teammates was a great learning experience. It’s quite different from the group projects assigned to us in our academic course. We had to divide tasks and responsibilities which required adjusting to different work styles and personalities. This helped each one of us become flexible and cooperative, and thus achieve our goals efficiently.
Gratitude and Acknowledgements
I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the following individuals who made my internship experience at Mahabahu truly unforgettable:
- Anjan Sir, Editor of Mahabahu, for providing me with this wonderful opportunity and offering guidance throughout the internship. His support and expertise were invaluable.
- Sanjeev Sir, for taking the time to assist us with the Startup Ecosystem Survey despite his busy schedule. He guided us all throughout the project on Startup Ecosystem and also made it easier for us to contact the resource persons from the incubators.
- Kakali Ma’am, our mentor, for her unwavering guidance, encouragement, and appreciation throughout the internship program. She is an exceptional mentor, and I am grateful for her support. Her enthusiasm and kindness motivated me to write additional articles for Mahabahu.
- My teammates, especially Kristi, for their cooperation and team spirit. We worked together, discussing and planning our next steps. Kristi’s support and guidance played a huge role in my development during this internship.
Thus, my one-month internship at Mahabahu was a wonderful experience that helped me gain valuable skills in research, writing, and communication, and developed an understanding of the startup ecosystem in Assam and I am sure that these skills will help me shape my future.
The challenges I faced during the internship taught me important lessons about patience, adaptability, and resilience.
I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked with such an exceptional team and mentors who guided, supported and encouraged me throughout my journey. This experience has not only helped me enhance my skills and knowledge but also inculcated in me a sense of confidence and purpose.
As I move forward, I am excited and eager to apply these skills and lessons that I gained during my internship to my future pursuits. I am confident that this experience will serve as a strong foundation for my future growth and development. Thank you, Mahabahu, for such an unforgettable internship experience!
