Mahabahu Mirror: A Bold New Chapter in Climate Journalism

The launch of Mahabahu Mirror marks a significant milestone in India’s print media landscape, introducing a powerful new monthly English magazine dedicated to connecting local realities with global environmental conversations. Created by the experienced team behind Mahabahu.com, this publication represents far more than just a new title on the newsstands; it is the thoughtful revival of a respected four-decade-old journalistic legacy.

Mahabahu Mirror: A Bold New Chapter in Climate Journalism

First Issue of Mahabahu in 1980 ( An Assamese Fortnightly)

The story of Mahabahu began in Assam back in 1980 as a fortnightly print publication, which later transitioned into a globally accessible digital platform in 2017. With the rollout of this print edition, the editorial team successfully bridges traditional publishing with modern digital journalism, reaffirming a long-standing commitment to independent, evidence-based, and solution-oriented reporting. Registered with the Press Registrar General of India, the magazine is led by Editor Anjan Sarma, Managing Editor Rituraj Phukan, and Senior Editor Kakali Das, who together head a dedicated team of Research Editors Padmaza talukdar, Kaustubh Baruah, Sumit Baruah, and experienced photographers, designer, writers, climate activists aiming to reshape how we talk about climate, nature, and society.

The inaugural issue carries fifteen carefully curated feature articles that place a special editorial focus on the mighty Brahmaputra River. As one of Asia’s greatest waterways, the Brahmaputra serves as the ecological, cultural, and geopolitical lifeline for millions of people across the Eastern Himalayas and Northeast India.
Rather than settling for superficial headlines, the magazine offers deep dives into river ecology, biodiversity, climate change, and the deeply personal human stories intertwined with the changing landscape. A clear signal of this conservation-first philosophy is the debut cover itself, which features the endangered Gangetic river dolphin to immediately draw attention to the urgent need for environmental awareness and habitat protection.
Mahabahu Mirror: A Bold New Chapter in Climate Journalism
At a time when public discourse is frequently dominated by misinformation, intense polarization, and surface-level reporting, Mahabahu Mirror seeks to carve out a dedicated space for informed dialogue, scientific understanding, and constructive solutions.
While the magazine remains firmly anchored in the unique environment of the Eastern Himalayas and Northeast India, its vision embraces issues of global relevance. By blending rigorous science, environmental policy, and compelling human narratives, the publication is tailored for a diverse readership that includes researchers, students, policymakers, educators, and professionals who want to understand the forces shaping the world around them.

The Mahabahu Team and the Mahabahu Climate Forum warmly invite readers, writers, and institutions to explore this inaugural issue and become part of a journey grounded in knowledge, integrity, and hope for a sustainable future.
