The inspiration
Bhavartha Swarup, who tragically passed away at the tender age of 19 in 2023, was a passionate advocate for environmental protection and humanitarian causes.
Despite his young age, he left an indelible mark amongst his peers, friends and relatives through his tireless efforts to raise awareness about the pressing need to safeguard our planet and uplift vulnerable communities.
His legacy serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact one individual can have in fostering a more sustainable and compassionate world.
ABOUT MAHABAHU
Mahabahu, founded in 1980 as a fortnightly magazine, has evolved into a distinguished platform, serving as a repository of articles from personalities worldwide. Adapting to the digital era, Mahabahu now functions as an online magazine available in both English and Assamese, connecting with a global readership.
More than just a publication, it has become an international hub where writers, thinkers, learners, and entrepreneurs collaborate to transform ideas into action.
Mahabahu transcends traditional journalism, actively engaging in social development initiatives such as educational outreach, personality development programs, health camps, and advocacy for environmental and climate action.

The Mahabahu platform has also produced notable editions on pressing issues such as Afghan Women, Climate Change, Breast Cancer, and Indigenous Peoples’ Rights, among others.
Positioned as a catalyst for change, Mahabahu spotlights stories that demand urgent attention through comprehensive coverage and active community engagement, firmly establishing itself as a unique global platform rooted in Northeast India.
INTRODUCTION
Our planet is at the crossroads of increasingly disastrous climate change impacts, catastrophic loss of biodiversity and debilitating pollution of our salubrious environs.
While frontline communities struggle with these and other cascading societal impacts, stories of resilience and adaptations abound, driven by passionate leaders with innovative ideas and the zeal to change the world for the better.
The Mahabahu Writing Competition seeks to unearth the stories of these unsung heroes protecting our planet and inspire advancement of the SDGs through community-led climate action and forest conservation. This is envisaged as an annual international event by Mahabahu.
In pursuance of these goals, Mahabahu invites the participation of youth from all over the world for the 2024 Mahabahu Writing Competition on the topic elaborated below.
“Protecting Our Earth: Advancing Sustainable Development Through Climate Action and Forest Conservation”.
Terms and Conditions
Eligibility
– The Mahabahu Writing Competition is open to youth from ages 18 to 30 years.
– Submissions are welcome from any country but the essays must be written in English.
– Only original, unpublished work will be considered. Previously published submissions are not eligible for this competition.
– No plagiarized content or content created by generative AI (such as ChatGPT)
Participation Rules
– The submitted essays should be within the limits of 2500-3000 words.
– The deadline of submission is 2300 hours Indian Standard Time, on 15 October 2024,
– Only one submission per individual will be considered. Institutional and joint submissions are not allowed.
– All submissions will be retained by Mahabahu and maybe published in various media, including but not restricted to books, essay collections, online magazines, websites. Participants will be given due credit for the published work.
– All the submissions must include a half page bio of the participant along with a photograph.
– All submissions must be made through an email to editor@mahabahoo.com
Results and Awards
– Results will be declared during the annual UNFCCC negotiation (COP29)
– First Prize: -The Bhavartha Swarup Memorial Mahabahu Award 2024 will comprise of a cash prize of INR 30,000/- (approximately USD 375), publication in Mahabahu, and a certificate
– Second Prize: INR 20,000/- (approximately USD 250), publication in Mahabahu, and a certificate
– Third Prize: INR 10,000/- (approximately USD 125), publication in Mahabahu, and a certificate
– The decision of the enumerators will be final.
