MISS AI: World’s 1st Artificial Intelligence Beauty Pageant
KAKALI DAS
In the ever-evolving world of AI, a new phenomenon has emerged: AI Beauty Pageants. However, it may seem like a dystopian nightmare as we introduce you to this unsettling development.
Introducing Miss AI, the world’s first Artificial Intelligence Beauty Pageant, where virtual models generated by AI will compete against each other on the digital runway.
What parameters will determine the winner? Who will serve as the judge? And what exactly is the purpose behind this contest?
With their regressive and demeaning nature, beauty pageants raise concerns about exacerbating existing issues. Adding AI to the mix begs the question: will these problems only intensify?
Is it possible for Artificial Intelligence to contribute to curing cancer? Can AI play a role in preventing future pandemics? And could it potentially unlock the pathway to world peace?
As AI continues to captivate the world with its potential, humans have posed significant requests, yet what we never asked for was: the perpetuation of impossible beauty standards and the reinforcement of banal and demeaning traditions like beauty pageants, which symbolize abuse and misogyny. Sadly, AI is already deeply entrenched in these practices and more.
Take, for instance, Miss AI, the world’s first Artificial Intelligence Beauty Pageant launched by a Content Creation platform. The competition will sift through and evaluate virtual models, all AI-generated images of women. The crowned Miss AI, determined by the judges, will grant the creator of the winning image a cash prize of approximately $8000.
Miss AI will be selected primarily based on appearance. Additionally, judges will consider the implementation of AI tools and the social media influence of these virtual models, including factors such as their follower count and the perceived “personality” of these AI-generated women.
Participants will be required to answer a series of questions, including one about their dream to make the world a better place.
The participants will be judged by AI models named Altana Lopez and Emily Pellegrini.
Pellegrini was crafted by an anonymous creator who consulted ChatGPT to understand the archetype of the average man’s dream girl, designing the model accordingly.
On the other hand, Lopez was developed as Spain’s premier AI model, but its creator faced criticism for sexualizing Lopez’s image.
“If we don’t follow this aesthetic, brands won’t be interested. To change this system, you have to change the vision of the brands. The world in general is sexualised”, its creators said.
It’s indeed a troubling reality. Beauty pageants often reveal regressive attitudes. Just this year, Miss Japan gave up her crown amid scandal over an affair. Miss France faced harsh backlash for her choice of short hair. And in 2018, Miss Ukraine was disqualified simply because she was a divorced mother. Unfortunately, these instances barely scratch the surface of the issues ingrained within such competitions.
Beauty contests can also be rife with abuse. In 2023, contestants of Miss Universe Indonesia took a stand by filing police complaints regarding incidents of sexual harassment. Shockingly, at least five participants were subjected to demands to strip down to their undergarments.
Beauty pageants should have no foothold in our present, let alone our future. Yet, they’re evidently adapting with AI, further perpetuating unrealistic beauty standards with computer-generated “perfection.”
For an instance, in 2016, a beauty contest was judged by AI, which displayed bias against participants with darker skin tones.
Furthermore, why limit it to just Miss AI? While both are problematic, the absence of a Mr. AI contest raises questions about gender equality in such competitions.
If posed with the question, “What would be your one dream to make the world a better place?” our response would be to abolish the antiquated and toxic spectacle of beauty pageants and ensure AI plays no part in perpetuating them.
