MYANMAR: My home country, where I was born, raised, and worked, is no longer a safe place!
Win Mar Lar Kyin
On February 1, 2021, the Myanmar Military took over the entire country and arrested all elected civilian leaders.
I was working in the Ministry of Health as an Assistant Director at that time.
Since I cannot accept the autocracy of the Military, I became involved in the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) and decided to quit my job until our civilian government and democracy are restored.
Eighteen days after the coup, Military forces and Police Armed Forces came to my house and tried to abduct me.
I was fortunate enough to narrowly escape the brutal arrest by the help of my good neighbors.
I unexpectedly became an internally displaced person, avoiding the Military Junta by hiding from place to place.
My home country, where I was born, raised, and worked, is no longer a safe place for me.
What will be next in this unwanted, unexpected turning point in my life?
As a refugee, I was not well-informed and was told that I had to start everything from the very beginning, even though I am a medical graduate in my homeland.
I decided not to accept any negotiation with the Myanmar Military and to face any challenges ahead to rebuild my life and career in the US as a refugee.
I resettled in the US in early 2022.
You may have some thoughts about the challenges and barriers refugees face in their new environment.
In reality, it is even more than that!
