OIL and NRL are setting up around 8 to 10 Compressed Bio-Gas Plants in different districts of Assam and other North-East states, a green initiative that would create wealth out of waste & address the burgeoning problem of waste management in towns and cities in the Northeast Region.
Collaboration with Urban Local bodies for municipal solid waste collection has been initiated, said Dr. Ranjit Rath, CMD, OIL and Chairman, NRL while speaking as Chief Guest at the Technical Symposium on ‘Creating Wealth from Waste: Role of Startup and New Enterprises’ organized by Pollution Control Board of Assam in Guwahati on 25 May, 2024.

Dr. Ranjit Rath elaborated that the OIL Township located in Duliajan is undergoing development to transform into a SMART city. This transformation encompasses the integration of modern living amenities. Key features of this development include the implementation of advanced solid waste disposal and treatment systems.
Additionally, there is a focus on improving the efficiency and capacity of drainage systems to better manage water flow and prevent flooding.
Another significant aspect of the SMART city initiative is the introduction of waste segregation at the source, which encourages residents to separate recyclable and non-recyclable materials, facilitating more efficient recycling processes.
Moreover, the township is adopting other best practices in urban management to ensure a sustainable and improved living environment for its residents. These initiatives collectively aim to enhance the quality of life and environmental sustainability within the OIL Township at Duliajan.
The legacy waste of Tinsukia is also being handled with active support of OIL. Speaking at the event, he reiterated the importance of segregation of domestic waste at its source and possible opportunities for startups in the entire scheme of activities.
Bhaskar Jyoti Phukan, Managing Director of Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), emphasized the importance of developing a robust ecosystem during his speech. He highlighted the necessity for different industries to actively support the collective efforts initiated by the Pollution Control Board of Assay.
According to Phukan, this support is crucial particularly in the aspect of financing solutions for environmental challenges, pointing out that the current revenue models employed are unsustainable for long-term environmental health.
He also addressed the youth present at the gathering, encouraging them to cultivate their entrepreneurial skills. Phukan urged these young enthusiasts to explore and develop startup ideas that focus on addressing smaller, specific issues within the environmental sector. This, he believes, is a vital step towards achieving larger environmental sustainability goals.

On the occasion, Dr. B. Kalyan Chakravarthy, IAS, who serves as the Principal Secretary to the Government of Assam in the Department of Skill, Employment, and Entrepreneurship Development, expressed his appreciation for the significant contributions made by Oil India Limited (OIL) and Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL).
He commended their dedicated efforts towards implementing effective waste management practices and transforming waste into valuable resources within the region. Dr. Chakravarthy highlighted the importance of such initiatives in promoting environmental sustainability and fostering economic growth, and he acknowledged the positive impact these efforts have on the community and the environment.

Earlier, Chairman Pollution Control Board of Assam, Dr. Arup Kr. Misra, while setting the context for the symposium impressed upon the need for collaboration amongst various stakeholders for proper waste management and encouraged young entrepreneurs to find more ways to create wealth from waste; citing examples from across the nation and the globe.
