An award for international environmental stewardship and exemplary leadership in climate action in harmony with nature will be given to an individual or institution working in different fields.
In order to honour Jadav Payeng, the forest man who started an environmental movement from Jorhat district and created a stir in the world, the Jyoti-Pratap Education Trust, located at Kaliapani in his home district of Jorhat, has decided to introduce this award annually from 2025.

The awardees will be selected by a five-member selection committee comprising Jyoti-Pratap Education Trust Secretary Pratap Saikia, Forest Man Jadav Payeng, international environmental activist Rituraj Phukan, Dr Bharat Bora, retired head of Geography at Piyali Phukan College, Namti in Sivasagar district and Dr Avani Bhagawati, retired professor of Environmental Geography and Agricultural Sciences at Gauhati University.
Applications will be accepted in July of each year.
Details of the award will be available on the website www.jyotiprotapgyanmargbidyalay.com
It is noteworthy that Jyoti-Pratap Gyanmarg Vidyalaya was established in the same year under the supervision of Jyoti-Pratap Education Trust, which was formed in 2021 under the Pratap Saikia Scheme of the society deprived of higher education due to poverty.
The school is committed to supporting the education of children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds by offering free admission to students from poor families in the area. This initiative has enabled a total of 182 students up to class 6 to receive a quality education without financial burden, ensuring that these young learners have the opportunity to build a strong academic foundation and pursue a brighter future.
In addition to providing free education, the school has taken further steps to promote cultural and educational values by establishing a Guru seat on the school premises. This initiative, under the Education Trust, aims to instill an appreciation for the Guru culture in children from a young age, fostering a sense of respect and dedication towards learning and mentorship.
Beyond its educational endeavors, the school is also dedicated to serving the broader community. It has contributed to the establishment of several public facilities, including a crematorium, an old age home, and an orphanage.
These facilities have been strategically built near the market area under the universal name, serving as essential resources for community members in need and demonstrating the school’s commitment to social responsibility and community welfare. Through these efforts, the school not only enhances educational opportunities but also contributes positively to the social fabric of the area, supporting individuals and families across various stages of life.
Jyoti-Pratap Education Trust has taken special initiative to bring out felicitation books to honour the eminent personalities of the region during their lifetime. The felicitation book of retired Professor Dr. Bharat Bora, a painter, author of 35 Nos of books including children’s books, has already been published.
The five member panel has decided to present the first ever Padma Shri Jadav Payeng International Award to Mr Karunakar Reddy for his outstanding environmental stewardship and climate action.
