Peace under tension: Ukraine between energy war and geopolitical calculations

ZINA BELGACEM
The Ukrainian conflict is no longer played out solely on the military field. It now extends to power grids, negotiation tables, and international forums. The recent power cuts caused by the strikes show that energy has become a major strategic lever, used to weaken societies and influence political balances, especially in the middle of winter.
On the diplomatic front, peace talks are coming up against a red line: territory. Kiev, supported by several European capitals, refuses any territorial concessions, fearing that it will open the door to a lasting challenge to the international order. For its part, Moscow hardened its rhetoric by warning that any Western military presence would be a legitimate target, thus expanding the conflict to a global strategic dimension.
The United States is trying to play a balancing act, between mediation and the preservation of its leadership. Optimistic announcements about an imminent outcome are however coming up against the divisions that have emerged within the Western camp, particularly during the Davos Forum. The central question is therefore no longer only when the war will end, but according to what rules and under what security architecture?
