Deepor Beel, a Ramsar Site and one of the largest freshwater lakes in the Brahmaputra valley, is facing numerous threats that jeopardize its delicate ecological balance. From encroachment and pollution to habitat destruction and illegal fishing, the challenges confronting Deepor Beel are manifold and urgent.

The rampant urbanization and industrialization in and around Guwahati have taken a toll on Deepor Beel’s ecosystem. The rapid expansion of infrastructure, including roads, residential complexes, and industrial estates, has encroached upon the wetland, leading to the loss of crucial habitat for resident and migratory bird species.

Moreover, the discharge of untreated sewage and industrial effluents into the lake has resulted in water pollution, further degrading the water quality and threatening the survival of aquatic life.
