Russia must return the legitimate historical name of Muscovy
IRINA MIROCHNIK
Putin needs to take away not only Crimea, but also the stolen “Russia”.
Muscovy is a great name for an Asian post-empire.
Russia until 1721 is known in Latin sources as Moscovia. And it was not considered to belong to European civilization.
Peter I stole the history of Kievan Rus and the name of his empire, trying to wrap Asian despotism in a European wrapper. Inside, the state remained part of Asia.
After 300 years, Putin has officially turned the remnants of the empire back to the east. The starting point is considered to be 2012 – Moscow began a confrontation with the West in favor of the so-called Eurasianism. 2022 was the peak of this confrontation. Putin promised to reorient the Russian economy towards Asia. Hence the talk about India and China, which are becoming Moscow’s main partners.
Here are the main touches of Moscow:
It was the Horde that formed the aggressive philosophy of Muscovy: the princes were ruthless to the people and at the same time obedient slaves of the khans. Alexander Nevsky, who is now promoted by Russian propaganda as a symbol of confrontation with the West, Nevsky fought with the Teutons, was the great-grandson of the Polovtsian Khan Kotyan and imposed heavy tribute on his people. Nevsky paid the horde, teamed up with Khan Batu to fight with his brothers and successfully plunder the Slavic lands.
Well-known politicians and experts argue that “modern Russia really remains the Golden Horde, and President Putin is the “last khan” of this state, which “should return to the Mongol empire with its center in Beijing.”
Today’s war of Russia against Ukraine is perceived by many as a continuation of the confrontation between Stalin and Bandera, that is, between the empire and a separate nation seeking to escape from its “embrace”.
But in fact, there is a mental conflict of symbols: the Horde consciousness of Alexander Nevsky and the pro-European Daniil Galitsky. King of Rus’ Daniel received a crown, scepter and crown from Pope Innocent IV, he was looking for loyal allies in Europe for the anti-Mongolian coalition.
Having revived the myth of Alexander Nevsky, the Kremlin distances itself from the historical legend about Rus’.
