RUSSIAN WAR CRIMES & HUMAN RIGHT VIOLATIONS IN THE WAR AGAINST UKRAINE

Summary update as of January 09, 2023
The use of weapons of mass destruction against civilians is a crime against humanity and a violation of the four Geneva Conventions of 1949.
By killing civilians, the aggressor’s forces continue to commit crimes against humanity as defined by the Statute of the International Military Tribunal and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, cynically disregarding all the requirements of the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War.
According to these norms, deliberate attacks on civilians who are not directly involved in hostilities are equated to war crimes.
The taking of civilian hostages is a direct violation of Articles 3 and 34 of the Geneva Convention with regard to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, Article 9 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
As of January 09, 2023, since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 453 children were killed and more than 877 children have been injured. Due to the active hostilities in affected regions, there is no possibility to inspect the areas of shelling and destruction.
In Ukraine, 7 civilians were killed in the period of January 06-08, and 33 more were injured. This was announced by the deputy head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Kyrylo Tymoshenko based on the data of the regional military administrations.

Donetsk and Luhansk Region
On the afternoon of January 9, Russian troops struck the village of Kurakhivka in Donetsk region with artillery. Houses and cars were damaged. There are wounded. This was reported by Kyrylo Tymoshenko.
Yesterday, on January 8, Russian invaders killed two civilians in Donetsk region, two more people were injured. This was announced by the head of the Donetsk regional military administration, Pavlo Kyrylenko.
In total, over the past day, the Russian occupiers have struck 14 strikes on 8 populated areas of Donetsk region. Russian troops fired from “Grad” MLRSs, tube artillery, and mortars. During the day, 8 residential buildings were destroyed and damaged in the region.
Kharkiv and Region
On January 9, the Russians shelled the market in Shevchenkove, Kharkiv region. The wreckage of one S-300 missile was found at the site. As a result of the shelling of the market, two women died – a 60-year-old woman died at the scene, a 54- year-old woman died in the hospital from her injuries. Also, the investigation is aware of 6 wounded from the shelling, including a 10-year-old girl.
On Saturday, January 7, a mini-refinery was destroyed during a missile attack on Merefa, Kharkiv region. As a result, one person died, another was injured. This is reported by the State Emergency Service of the Kharkiv region.
On January 8, the Russian occupiers fired artillery, tanks and mortars at several settlements in the Kharkiv region. The head of the regional military administration, Oleh Synegubov, announced this on January 9. As a result of the Russian strikes, private houses and commercial buildings were damaged, and a fire broke out.

Kherson and Region
In the afternoon of January 9, the Russian invaders once again shelled the city of Kherson. An enemy shell hit near one of the supermarkets where a man was walking. He died on the spot from a mine-explosive injury. Another woman was injured. According to preliminary information, the enemy launched mortar shelling.
During the day of January 8, the Russian military shelled the part of the Kherson region under the control of the Ukrainian authorities 77 times, three people were injured, the head of the regional military administration, Yaroslav Yanushevich, said. The Russians attacked settlements with artillery, small arms fire and mortars. The Russian military shelled the city of Kherson 21 times. Enemy shells hit private and apartment buildings.
Mykolaiv and Region
10 people were injured on January 9 as a result of a Russian missile attack on Ochakiv, Mykolaiv region. Among them is a 2-year-old child. This was reported by the head of the Mykolaiv regional military administration, Vitaliy Kim. He also added that the wounded are still arriving. Kyrylo Tymoshenko specified that as a result of attack more than 100 houses, vehicles of citizens, a hospital, enterprises and institutions were damaged.
As of the morning of January 9, there are 212 civilians who were injured as a result of enemy shelling in Mykolaiv hospitals. Another 29 people received outpatient care. This was announced by the head of the Mykolaiv Regional Council, Hanna Zamazeeva.

Sumy and Region
On January 8, Russian troops launched 144 landmines at the Sumy region. As a result, several local residential buildings and other infrastructure were affected. This was announced by the head of the Sumy regional military administra- tion, Dmytro Zhyvytskyi.
In particular, private houses of local residents, a school and a country club and a farm were damaged.
