With nearly 70 countries holding elections, this 2024 marks the largest global election year to date. Dubbed the “AI election year,” these elections worldwide are grappling with issues like deep fakes, Robo-calls, and the emergence of AI candidates.
Next month, the UK will hold elections, and AI Steve aims to become Britain’s first AI Member of Parliament (MP).
AI Steve is an AI persona based on real-life businessman Steve Endacott. It uses a rendition of Endacott’s voice and an avatar. AI Steve can handle up to 10,000 conversations simultaneously, allowing voters to ask questions or raise concerns at any time. This provides 24/7 access to the artificial intelligence candidate.

If elected, the question remains: will the AI persona or its creator, Steve Endacott, show up in parliament? The prospect of voting for an AI candidate raises significant questions about the future of representation.
Steve Endacott, a UK-based businessman, has long been frustrated with the government. In a bid to influence policy from within, Endacott decided to shift from criticizing from the outside to actively seeking political change. He ran in a local election in 2022, despite facing defeat, Endacott remains determined in his political aspirations.
“AI Steve is an AI candidate, a persona modeled after real-life Steve Endacott, utilizing Endacott’s voice and an avatar with grey hair, broad shoulders, and vacant eyes, resembling the typical image of a white male politician. This portrayal may contribute to its perceived overconfidence. AI Steve is vying to become the UK’s first AI MP and is running as an independent candidate for parliament. If elected, questions arise about how this unconventional representation would function.”
As the United Kingdom prepares for polls next month, Endacott asserts that this time will be different. Instead of putting himself forward as a candidate, on the 4th of July, AI Steve will be standing in the general election.

AI Steve has the capability to engage in up to 10,000 conversations simultaneously, transcribing and analyzing discussions. Voters can pose policy-related questions and raise issues directly to AI Steve, who offers 24/7 accessibility as a potential policymaker.AI Steve plans to incorporate suggestions and requests from constituents into its platform and make policy decisions based on analyzed data.
Here’s the catch: if AI Steve wins, you won’t see it in parliament. AI Steve serves as a conduit, with Steve Endacott ultimately taking the seat. Endacott, as AI Steve’s creator, will attend parliamentary sessions and meetings on its behalf.

However, there are a couple of issues to consider. Firstly, Endacott asserts that he will always vote in accordance with constituent preferences, aligning with the opinions expressed by AI Steve. This pledge sounds ambitious and almost too good to be true. Secondly, questions arise about the trustworthiness of AI Steve. What do we truly know about its reliability and capabilities?AI is prone to hallucinations, glitches, and for now, it remains under the control of its creator, raising concerns about potential misuse of the technology. The worst-case scenarios are numerous and extend beyond AI Steve.

In the 2024 Europe AI elections, nearly 70 countries are utilizing AI extensively. From AI-powered callers to deep fakes, AI is revolutionizing global elections while policymakers struggle to keep pace with advancing technology.Without stronger regulations, it won’t be long before AI encroaches on their roles, almost fulfilling a self-fulfilling prophecy. As some argue, politics is too critical to be solely entrusted to politicians.
