NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams have finally returned to Earth after an unplanned nine-month stay in space.

Their original mission was expected to last only eight days, but due to technical difficulties, their return was repeatedly delayed.

The two astronauts, along with fellow American Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Gorbunov, successfully landed off the coast of Tallahassee, Florida, on March 19, 2025. The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft brought them back in a mission that caught global attention.

Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore were the first crew to fly on Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. They launched in June 2024 for what was meant to be a short test mission.

However, after reaching the International Space Station (ISS), problems with the Starliner’s propulsion system, including helium leaks and thruster malfunctions made it unsafe for their return. NASA decided that they should remain on the ISS until a safe return option was arranged.

Eventually, Boeing’s Starliner returned to Earth without its crew. As a result, Williams and Wilmore had to wait for another spacecraft to bring them home. What was supposed to be a brief stay turned into a record-breaking 286-day mission.

In September 2024, a replacement rescue mission was launched, with astronauts Nick Hague and Alexander Gorbunov arriving on the ISS with an extra two seats in their SpaceX Dragon capsule. However, this new spacecraft also faced technical problems, requiring extensive battery repairs before it could be used for the return journey. Finally, NASA decided that Williams and Wilmore would return as part of the scheduled NASA Crew-9 rotation using SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft.

After months of waiting, the astronauts finally left the ISS for their return journey. They undocked from the space station on March 18, 2025, at 1:05 AM ET. The spacecraft took nearly 17 hours to travel back to Earth. During re-entry, the capsule used Earth’s atmosphere and two sets of parachutes to slow down from an orbital speed of 28,800 kilometres per hour to just 27 kilometres per hour before splashdown.

While many wondered why it took SpaceX’s Dragon 17 hours to bring them back when Russia’s Soyuz spacecraft has completed similar trips in just 3.5 hours. The reason lies in their different approaches—Soyuz follows a more direct ballistic descent, while SpaceX’s Dragon prioritizes a smoother and more controlled re-entry.

At 5:57 PM local time on March 19, the spacecraft safely splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean, where rescue teams quickly recovered the crew. Videos of Sunita Williams smiling and waving after landing spread quickly across social media, reassuring the world that she was safe.

The prolonged stay of the astronauts in space became a significant global event. Many space enthusiasts and experts closely followed NASA’s contingency planning. It also turned into a political issue, with former U.S. President Donald Trump accusing President Joe Biden of abandoning the astronauts and delaying their return. Trump, along with his advisor Elon Musk—who leads SpaceX—claimed that NASA could have brought them back sooner.

Trump also made headlines for his controversial comments about Sunita Williams, referring to her as “the woman with the wild hair” and making remarks about the personal dynamic between her and Wilmore during their extended stay in space.

Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a congratulatory letter to Sunita Williams, expressing that “1.4 billion Indians have always taken great pride in her achievements.” He also mentioned that he looked forward to seeing her visit India soon.

Though their stay on the ISS was unexpected, it was not dangerous. The space station is designed to accommodate long-term missions. During their time there, Williams and Wilmore conducted critical scientific experiments and contributed to ongoing research.

However, prolonged exposure to microgravity does have significant effects on the human body. Astronauts returning to Earth after long missions often face difficulties walking, dizziness, sudden fainting spells, and low blood pressure. This happens because, in space, the human body does not need to work against gravity, leading to muscle and bone loss.

To help them recover, Wilmore and Williams will now undergo a 45-day rehabilitation program in Houston, where NASA’s medical experts will monitor their health and ensure they adjust properly to Earth’s gravity.

Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore’s extended mission is now ranked sixth in the U.S. record books for longest single-mission durations.

This mission also highlighted the ongoing challenges with Boeing’s Starliner program. While the spacecraft was supposed to be a reliable alternative for NASA’s space travel needs, its failures have raised serious concerns. The Starliner program, which has already been delayed for years, now faces additional scrutiny following these technical issues.

At the same time, SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft proved once again that it is a reliable option for space travel. This successful return mission reinforced SpaceX’s role as NASA’s preferred commercial partner for astronaut transport.

Despite the delays, challenges, and political debates surrounding their mission, Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore have returned home safely. Their journey is a proof to the unpredictability of space travel and the dedication of astronauts who push the boundaries of human exploration.

As the world welcomes them back, their experience will undoubtedly contribute to future space missions, making space travel safer and more efficient.
