Have you ever forget meaning of a word you know you have previously looked online?
When was the last time you tried to remember something from your internal memory before looking it up on google?
Do you ever come across a situation where you cannot remember a spelling of a word because, well, our autocorrect so nicely suggest the spelling we are about to type?
Ok one last question, do you ever imagine if you lost your smartphone how will you cope with losing all the information you stored in your mobile?
If your answers to these questions indicates a higher reliance on digital devices, you are not alone, according to many studies, this is called Digital Amnesia, a type of amnesia which has not been proven scientifically yet but experts believe Digital Amnesia is there and it is very prevalent.

Digital Amnesia is a phenomenon where individuals tend to not remember information due to their dependency on digital devices, they believe that as the information is easily available on their digital devices, hence there is no need to try to remember it which is also known as cognitive laziness. It is most common among the younger generation. According to experts, digital dependency alters the way we process information in our brain which hinders us from learning any new skills, leading to only shallow learning, divided attention, lack of creativity and difficulty in remembering and comprehending information.
The awareness regarding digital dependency is much important among the students as our education system is still memory based, and students are at that stage of their lives where they must learn new skills to acquire a successful career. Good memory and thinking skills are essential for them. The usage of smartphones has increased more and it will more likely to escalate because of the advent of generative AI in every app and websites. There for it is crucial that smartphones serve as aids to students’ cognitive abilities rather than hindering them.
Experts in the field of psychology believes thathigher digital dependency poses risk of decline in memory performance, lower working memory capacity and lesser cognitive flexibility as there is less efforts by our brains toengage in deep processing of knowledge.
The broader effects of digital dependency are nomophobia (no-mobile -phobia) a type of phobia where we become anxious if we can’t find our smartphones near us, lower attention span meaning inability to concentrate on a single subject is caused by dopamine being stimulated by excessive notifications, multitasking, and digital content consumption, and social isolation.
The working memory is also affected by constant going back and forth without fully processing the information and over time affects the long -term memory as well.

We can counter the effects of digital amnesia; it is not as difficult as one may find. On an individual level, can start with simple habits like summarizing what we learn in our own words, using spaced repetition, and taking handwritten notes. Gradually reducing screen timings and practicing mindfulness helps improving focus. Setting tech-free’ study zones or turning on the focus-mode on phone also helps build self-discipline and better memory retention.
We can also start journaling as well and use conventional methods to read books not through kindles or pdfs but from original books. Teachers must adopt methods that involves deeper cognitive process not just memorization of existing facts. They should assign assignments which cultivate critical thinking and creativity.
Educators must also focus on imparting digital literacy that teaches the students the responsible ways of using digital devices. Moreover, Government with the help of education institutions must organise programmes on effects of digital dependency, responsible use of AI, awareness about the concept of Digital Amnesia, workshops on effective learning strategies etc.
We simply cannot deny the inevitable use of technology and its benefits in today’s digital scenario, one cannot imagine to get through even one day without the use of digital devices, and of course with the advent of AI, which is a great tool making our work faster and more convenient, we cannot ignore their numerous advantages if we want to survive in this new job market, however, we can learn to use them responsibly and wisely.
Students, teachers, and academic institutions can collaborate to foster a society in which digital gadgets are utilized as effective tools rather than as a means of undermining our capacity for brilliant minds.
