An announcer of Russian television, smilingly savoring the suffering of Ukrainians from a blackout, raging people with mock-up rockets repeating “to Washington” like a mantra, shows with constant sadistic scenarios of violence, adult men with pleasure telling on TV how they want to drown and burn children, as well as educated intellectuals who look at it with the thought “what’s wrong here” – what do they have in common?
These are sadists.
And what they do is called a sadistic fantasy, a sadistic scenario that takes shape long before the act of violence.
The obsessive, repetitive fantasies delight the subjects as they addictively replay scenes of violence, savoring them over and over again. Such pathological fantasizing combines both supervaluable formations and compensatory, revanchist fantasies.
A key feature of sadism and sadistic fantasies is the enjoyment of cruelty. In the absence of containment, the reward threshold rises and the sadist needs to constantly increase the level of fantasy cruelty in order to maintain the required level of arousal. Brain scans of sadists have shown that scenes of aggression (such as when someone breaks glass) excite them much more than sex scenes.
When does a sadist turn his fantasies into reality?
Immediately, as soon as he has the opportunity and there is no deterrent punishment. Research shows that sadists are willing to waste time and money doing boring jobs just to be able to bully not only a random person, but even a helping partner. The vicious circle of sadism has an addictive mechanism: inflaming excitement in fantasies, committing an act of violence, then a drop in mood after and attempts to raise it again with new violence.

Moreover, aggression can be anything – from verbal to physical.
Therefore, it is important to be able to recognize sadists and understand how interaction with a sadist differs from interaction with mentally healthy people. You can recognize a sadist by monitoring his reaction (verbal and non-verbal) to violence, how he savores the pain of other people, and does not sympathize with them. Everyday sadists have a moral deformation – they react with an empty “so what’s wrong here” to news or reports of acts of violence. So just by watching a person you recognize a sadist.
Remember that a sadist uses violence without provocation. Moreover, sadists take more pleasure in attacking completely harmless victims. Irresponsibility only provokes the sadist – in the absence of a reaction, the sadist only increases aggression. Also, to counteract sadism, it is important to recognize his sadistic script and destroy it, not react as he expects, which will break his buzz. The sadist is fully sane and perfectly aware of what he is doing, so there is no need to write off his actions as unconsciousness. And most importantly, it is impossible to rationally negotiate with a sadist, since his impulses are completely irrational. Therefore, to stop a sadist, to break his fantasies, can only be his animal fear and horror of you, the inevitability of severe punishment.
