Today is the 42nd day of WAR in Ukraine.
Feel what it’s like to be Ukrainians… Yesterday another package of sanctions was announced against Russia. But let’s be realistic, sanctions are not the tool that will stop the war, especially when they have so many loopholes.
Sanctions do their job but they do it slowly and many months are needed to have serious impact. Sanctions really work when they constitute a complex of measures linked with each other thus multiplying the impact.
Air transportation blockade is not sufficient and must be accompanied by sea blockade, railroad blockade and vehicles blockade.
Disconnection of Russian banks is a half measure until Sberbank, the largest financial institution of Russia, is still operating freely.
Refusing from EUR 4bn import of Russian coal is ridiculous comparing with several hundred billion euro revenues for oil and gas.
Sanctions against Russian elites are painful, but they do not create expected boiling effect.
Sanctions will not make people in Russia protest on the streets against the war.
Totalitarian state with no rule of law, no independent media and massive propaganda easily absorbs these half measures so far.
Sanctions are working too slowly and they are not able to make Putin change his plans.
Sanctions will not stop Russian army from concentration in the east of Ukraine and further massive attacks.
Sanctions will not prevent Russia from mobilization of new units of cannon fodder to throw them into Ukraine.
Sanctions will not stop Russian propaganda, which has already evolved from “Ukrainians are our brothers but their government is Nazi, let’s make fast and painless special operation” to aggressive and hypnotizing narrative “all Ukrainians are Nazi, we must clean that territory from them”.
Sanctions will complicate the production of modern weapons in Russia, but aggressor still has a lot of very simple rockets, missiles and bombs to keep on throwing them on Ukrainian territory for months.
Sanctions against Russia can’t protect our children today.
Today our children are dying from shelling, air strikes and bombs.
Today they die in basements of Mariupol from lack of water.
Today they die in occupied cities from bullets of Russian soldiers.
We need all available military supplies to crush Russians on the battlefields, in the air and on the sea.
We need all you can send to protect our children.
We are the nation. We are Ukrainians!
