Zelensky asked to exclude Russia from UNESCO

President of #Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the participants of the 215th session of the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) with a request to exclude #Russia from its membership.
“Tell me, please, why there are still representatives of Russia among you? What are they doing at UNESCO?” the Ukrainian president asked. “How can representatives of a terrorist state that is proud of the destruction it causes in another country be included in UNESCO?”
Zelensky expressed the opinion that Russia does not have the right to chair the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, because, according to him, this is detrimental to the organization’s reputation.
“A terrorist state definitely has no right to chair one of the key bodies for the protection of cultural and natural heritage – the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. Such a Russian chairmanship devalues the institution itself – its weight, its reputation,” the Ukrainian president said.
In support of his words, Zelensky cited the following statistics: since February 24, Russian troops have already damaged (or even completely destroyed) more than 2,600 educational facilities located on the territory of Ukraine, and Russian aircraft and artillery have fired at more than 500 #cultural heritage sites, cultural institutions and religious buildings, including almost 200 #temples and churches.
“You can’t give Russia the authority of UNESCO to destroy,” he said. “A terrorist state must be excluded from all bodies of UNESCO and the organization itself.”
