Bulgaria, July 10 – In an extraordinary find, archaeologists in Bulgaria have uncovered a remarkably well-preserved marble statue from an ancient Roman sewer near the village of Rupite.
The statue, which stands taller than an average man, was discovered last week during an excavation led by Lyudmil Vagalinski, the scientific director of the project.
The statue, believed to depict the god HERMES, was unearthed gradually by the team, revealing intricate carvings that remains intact over the centuries. From the finely detailed toenails to the torso and head, its expressive facial features, the statue’s preservation is considered exceptional. Although it is missing parts of its right arm and left hand, the quality and detail of the statue have captivated experts and historians alike.

Dr. Vagalinski explained that the statue likely dates back to around 380 A.D., a period when emperor Theodosius I had declared Christianity as the official religion of the Roman empire. This epoch marked a significant transition from paganism to Christianity, leading pagans to conceal their religious artefacts to protect them from destruction.
The statue’s placement in the sewer suggests it may have been hidden deliberately to avoid the purge s against pagan symbols during the tumultuous time.
The discovery has profound implications for the understanding of Heraclea Sintica, a relatively obscure Roman city. Previously, significant artefacts were predominately found in more affluent areas of the Roman Empire. The unearthing of this high quality statue in Heraclea Sintica challenges these assumptions, suggesting that this city may have been more prosperous and culturally rich than previously thought.
Dr. Vagalinski stated “This find is monumental not just for Bulgaria, but for the broader historical and archaeological community”. Also stated “it provides a rare glimpse into the religious practices and societal shifts of the late Roman empire”
Currently, the team is meticulously extracting the statue from its underground resting place. Detailed analysis and dating procedures are planned to determine its precise age and origin. Once these studies are complete the statue will be displayed in a local museum, allowing the public to witness this remarkable piece of history
“This statue deepens our understanding of ancient Bulgarian heritage and the lengths to which pagans went to safeguard their deities amidst the rise of christianity,” Dr Vagalinski added.

The discovery has already garnered significant attention from the global archaeological community, with scholars eagerly awaiting further details from the ongoing research. As the team continues their work, this astonishing find promises to shed new light on a pivotal period in history and the enduring legacy of ancient civilization.
