What are the Environmental Milestones and Challenges in 2025?
CLIMATE CHANGE

The year 2025 is poised to be significant for environmental initiatives, with nations setting ambitious new climate targets and transitions in national leadership potentially reshaping global climate strategies.
The year 2024 witnessed unprecedented global temperatures, marking the first time the average temperature clearly exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
Multiple global records were shattered, including those for greenhouse gas concentrations, air temperatures, and sea surface temperatures.

These alarming trends fueled extreme events such as floods, heatwaves, and wildfires, highlighting the escalating impacts of climate change.
After a tragic yet transformative 2024, what lies ahead this year in terms of environmental progress and action?
2025 is anticipated to be another scorching year, projected to rank among the three hottest years on record globally, according to the UK’s Met Office. The year began with deadly wildfires devastating parts of Los Angeles, claiming lives and livelihoods just days into January.
Despite the Pacific Ocean transitioning into a La Niña phase, characterized by cooler sea surface temperatures and overall milder conditions, warm temperatures are still forecast for 2025.
According to the latest report by the World Economic Forum, extreme weather events have been identified as the second-highest global risk over the next two years.
A key environmental milestone in 2025 is the update of climate action plans by countries under the Paris Agreement, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). These plans detail how each country aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to stay within the 1.5°C threshold and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

This coincides with Donald Trump being elected for a second term as president. The president-elect has announced plans to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement, the legally binding UN treaty on climate change. He may also consider withdrawing the country from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the organization that serves as the foundation for global climate action.
In 2025, renewables are set to surpass coal as the leading power source for the first time in history. Meanwhile, China projects that Electric Vehicle (EV) sales will exceed those of Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles, marking a monumental milestone in the automotive industry.
In March 2025, the Russian invasion of Ukraine will mark its fourth year, while Israel’s military actions against Palestine will enter their second year. Although ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas are nearing a resolution, the ongoing conflicts have led to significant environmental destruction, with long-lasting effects that aggravates the vulnerability of the affected populations.
In 2024, countries were unable to reach an agreement on addressing plastic pollution after more than two years of negotiations. Delegates at the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee agreed to reconvene in 2025, with hopes that a global plastics treaty will be signed.
This year, several exciting satellite launches are expected, designed to collect data on climate conditions as well as methane and CO2 emissions. These satellites will provide global overviews and crucial insights into environmental pollution and its trends.
For instance, MicroCarb, the first European satellite dedicated to measuring atmospheric carbon dioxide and other emission sources, is slated for launch in May 2025.
This year will also witness all seven other planets in the solar system appearing in the night sky simultaneously, a rare occurrence. Saturn, Mercury, Neptune, Venus, Uranus, Jupiter, and Mars will align in a neat formation early in the year. This event is known as the Great Planetary Alignment.
COP30, marking the 10th anniversary of the landmark Paris Agreement, is expected to focus heavily on mitigation—designing actions and policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions—along with climate finance. The event will be held in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest in Belém, Brazil.
From climate change-induced disasters to biodiversity loss and plastic pollution, the environmental challenges of 2025 highlight the urgent need for both climate change mitigation and adaptation. However, the most significant moments may ultimately prove to be those that are unpredictable.
