WHEN AFRICA TURNS WHITE: Lesotho’s Winter Wonderland in the Heart of Africa
Maneo Sekata
Many people think of Africa as a hot, sunny place with deserts and savannas. But Lesotho, a small landlocked country in Southern Africa, is very different. It is one of the few places in Africa where snow falls every year.
Lesotho is called the “Kingdom in the Sky” because it is the only country in the world where every part is more than 1,000 meters above sea level. This high altitude makes the weather cold in winter.
From May to September, the country transforms into a white wonderland. Snow covers the Maloti Mountains, turning villages into scenes that look like postcards from Europe. Roads become icy, rivers freeze at the edges, and the air is crisp and fresh.
Snow brings both beauty and challenge to life in Lesotho. Basothochildren enjoy playing and building snowmen, while farmers prepare carefully for the cold months when crops grow slowly. Snowis more than just a pretty sight – it shapes farming, transport, and daily routines during winter.
In Basothovillages, people collect firewood, store food, and wear thick traditional blankets called Seanamarena.
Shepards care for their animals despite cold winds, andfamilies gather inside their round homes to share stories, sing songs, and drink hot motoho, a sorghum porridge.
“The snowy season is more than just a surprise to outsiders – it is part of Lesotho’s unique identity. It shows that Africa is not one picture, but many. Lesotho’s winters remind us that nature always has more stories to tell.”
Snow also attracts tourists from around the world who come for skiing, snowboarding, and to enjoy the magical winter atmosphere at Afriski in Lesotho.

So, the next time you think snow belongs only to Europe or North America, remember the Kingdom in the Sky. Lesotho stands as a living proof that even in Africa, winter can be white.
