The climate crisis is no longer a distant possibility. From floods and heatwaves to droughts and biodiversity loss, its impacts are being felt across communities worldwide, especially in countries of the Global South. Yet, when conversations around climate policy and global negotiations emerge, many young people often find themselves asking the same question:

“I want to understand climate negotiations and COP processes, but where do I even begin?”

Youth for COP: Building the Next Generation of Climate Leaders from the Global South

This is where Youth for COP steps in.

But before understanding the programme, it is important to understand the platform it is preparing young people for — the COP.

What is COP?

COP stands for the Conference of the Parties, the formal decision-making meeting convened under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), a multilateral treaty adopted in 1992.

Every year, representatives from governments across the world gather at COP to negotiate and discuss global climate action. These meetings are critical because they shape international decisions around:

  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
  • Limiting global warming to 1.5°C
  • Climate adaptation strategies
  • Climate finance
  • Loss and Damage support for vulnerable nations
  • Technology transfer and capacity-building

Countries participating in the Paris Agreement also present their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) — national climate action plans outlining how they aim to reduce emissions and adapt to climate impacts.

In simple terms, COP is where the future of global climate policy is negotiated.

Why Youth for COP?

For many young people, climate negotiations can often seem technical, intimidating, and inaccessible. Terms like mitigation, adaptation, Article 6, climate finance, or global stocktake may sound overwhelming at first.

Recognising this gap, The Climate Reality Project India & South Asia, along with Mahabahu Climate Forum and several international partners, launched Youth for COP in 2024.

Youth for COP is a global youth leadership initiative designed to strengthen climate literacy, systems understanding, and communication skills among young people from the Global South ahead of COP negotiations.

This year, the world will gather for COP31 in Antalya, Turkey, and Youth for COP aims to ensure that more young people are informed, prepared, and confident enough to engage with these global conversations.

Youth for COP: Building the Next Generation of Climate Leaders from the Global South

From a Regional Initiative to a Global Platform

What began as a regional capacity-building effort has now evolved into a truly global platform.

The first edition of Youth for COP engaged participants from 5 countries. By the second edition, participation expanded to 48 countries, bringing together young people living on the frontlines of the climate crisis.

The programme is completely free of cost and creates a space where youth can:

  • Learn about international climate negotiations
  • Understand the COP process in simplified formats
  • Build communication and advocacy skills
  • Exchange ideas with peers from different countries
  • Engage with experts, practitioners, and climate leaders

The Impact So Far

Over the last two editions, Youth for COP has created a growing ecosystem of young climate advocates across the Global South.

Programme Impact:

  • 3,600+ registered youth participants
  • 48+ participating countries
  • 40+ global speakers
  • 25 partner youth organisations
  • 80+ blogs authored by participants
  • 350+ social media advocacy posts created by youth

One of the most encouraging outcomes has been seeing participants move from being passive observers to active contributors in climate conversations.

Youth for COP 3

By the end of the programme, participants were confidently writing blog articles, creating social media campaigns, and sharing their expectations from COP processes. Several participant contributions were showcased through Youth for COP platforms and the Climate Action Network South Asia (CANSA).

Selected participants were also awarded Certificates with Distinction for their exceptional engagement and contributions.

What’s New in the Third Edition?

The third edition of Youth for COP has been redesigned based on participant feedback and evolving global climate discussions.

This year’s programme will include:

  • A mix of live sessions and interactive workshops
  • Self-paced learning modules
  • An online Mock COP simulation
  • Regional engagement opportunities, including Assam-based physical events
  • Networking opportunities with peers from across the world

The programme is open to young people aged 18–30 years from the Global South.

More than just a learning programme, Youth for COP aims to create a generation of young people who understand not only the science of climate change, but also the systems, politics, and negotiations that influence climate action globally.

Why This Matters?

Young people are inheriting a world shaped by decisions being negotiated today. Yet many still remain excluded from understanding how these systems function.

Youth for COP attempts to change that narrative.

Because meaningful climate action is not only about protesting on the streets or posting online — it is also about understanding the rooms where decisions are made, policies are negotiated, and futures are shaped.

As COP31 approaches, the question is no longer whether youth should be involved in climate conversations.

The real question is:
Will young people be prepared enough to meaningfully participate when those conversations shape the future they will inherit?

Youth for COP hopes to be one answer to that question.

Registrations for the third edition are currently open until 30 May 2026.
