Discover the Magic of Dolce Far Niente: Cultivating Peace in a Busy World
PARISMITA GOSWAMI
Dolce Far Niente, meaning; “the sweetness of doing nothing,” became more popular through social and entertainment media. The sweetness of doing nothing encapsulates the art of savoring passivity and leisure. It is about finding joy in simple moments, free from any obligations.
Dolce Far Niente was also depicted in the American Movie Eat, Pray and Love starring Julia Roberts as Elizabeth Gilbert. Furthermore, Economic Times also wrote an article on this cherished practice that allows you to indulge in the present, appreciate life’s small pleasures, and nurture a sense of inner tranquility.
To understand, let’s dive deeper.
Dolce Far Niente is all we need in the fast-paced and competitive world. I still remember my childhood days when I used to sit beside my family during summer evenings and do nothing but relax with a chilling glass of lemon juice. Summer breaks were the most awaited time of the year. Playing around with the neighborhood kids, watching cartoons, and sipping mangoes.
Wow!! I still call it the best days of my life. And, not forgetting sitting with my grandparents near the bonfire during winters and listening to endless Assamese folktales.
Time flies; as I grew up, fierce competition and materialism consumed me; to excel at school, college, university, job, and whatnot. This made me bound to question myself and the world. Is this what life is all about? Guess this question appears in your mind too.
And one night, while scrolling Instagram, I came across a reel depicting Dolce Far Niente. My thirst and curiosity landed me in writing, learning, and understanding more about it. And that’s how I realized how much it is needed in today’s time. Moreover, how better my old days were?
Usually, to unload my stress and recurring life problems, I travel. Experience, feel some fresh air, and ground me in nature. But, occasionally, I do nothing but relax, read, observe, or write on weekends. I sit in my bed and sip my favorite tea while looking outside my window at the view of a magnificent tree where the cuckoos and sparrows visit me. That may be the moment of peace in my life/Dolce Far Niente.
In our pursuit of amusement, we frequently find solace in watching videos, indulging in alcoholic beverages, and unhealthy snacking. However, amidst the hectic nature of our lives, we often overlook the inherent delight of exploring our surroundings and cherishing our interpersonal connections.
It is crucial to value modest joys and not experience remorse when occasionally relishing the art of “dolce far niente” or the pleasurable act of idleness. Paradoxically, those facing adversity derive more satisfaction from life than the affluent elite, who perpetually seek fulfillment through entertainment.
But, take a pause, inhale deeply, and observe your surroundings. Engage in the beauty of life surrounding you. Nothing fancy! Well, this perfectly embodies the essence of the Italian concept.
