Manipur’s Situation TRAGIC: Minister Jaishankar!
DILIP DAIMARY
The serene landscapes of Manipur, a state in India’s northeastern frontier, have been overshadowed by a tragic narrative of discord and violence.
Communities are left splintered, and the once-peaceful streets are marred by the specter of bloodshed. The latest abduction of Additional Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar, allegedly by members of the Arambai Tenggol, has intensified an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty throughout the region.
The recent surge in violence dates back to May 3, 2023, when Manipur became the epicenter of conflict between the Meitei and the Kuki ethnic groups.
A ‘Tribal Solidarity March‘ in the hill districts, opposing the Meitei community’s request for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, sparked intense confrontations that led to 219 casualties. This incident has reignited longstanding ethnic hostilities that have afflicted the state for generations.
The Meitei community, representing approximately 53% of the state’s population, primarily resides in the Imphal Valley, while other tribal groups, including the Nagas and Kukis, constitute around 40% and mainly inhabit the surrounding hill districts. Historical resentments and territorial disputes have amplified the ethnic rifts, initiating a relentless cycle of violence and retribution that has thrust Manipur into a perpetual state of crisis.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, while addressing the Indian diaspora in Seoul during his four-day visit to South Korea and Japan, conveyed his profound concern about the dire circumstances in Manipur, labeling the situation as “truly tragic.” His speech resonated with the desperate yearning of all Indians for peace to be reinstated in this troubled northeastern state.
During his four-day diplomatic trip to South Korea and Japan, India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, took the opportunity to connect with the Indian expatriate community in Seoul. In a heartfelt address to his fellow countrymen and women living abroad, he expressed his deep-seated worries regarding the turbulent situation unfolding in the northeastern state of Manipur.
Labeling the predicament as “truly tragic,” Minister Jaishankar’s words reflected a palpable sense of urgency and empathy for the plight of those affected by the unrest for the first time after many month of SILENCE! from Modi and Jaishankar!
The minister’s speech not only highlighted the challenges faced by the region but also captured the collective sentiment of Indians around the globe—the earnest longing for harmony and the restoration of peace in Manipur. His remarks underscored the Indian government’s awareness of the severity of the circumstances and its commitment to seeking resolutions that can bring stability to the area.
Jaishankar’s engagement with the Indian diaspora demonstrated the government’s efforts to keep overseas Indians connected to the domestic affairs of their homeland, acknowledging that even though they are physically distant, their hearts and hopes remain intertwined with the nation’s destiny.
Through such interactions, the minister aimed to rally the support of the Indian community abroad and to reassure them that the Indian government is actively addressing the challenges back home, including those in the conflict-affected regions such as Manipur.
Mr. Jaishankar highlighted the complex nature of the conflict, pointing to the intricate interplay among communities and historical grievances as key factors inciting ethnic tensions. He expressed solidarity with the nation’s collective dismay and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to reestablishing law and order in Manipur. According to Mr. Jaishankar, the ongoing unrest does not mirror the vision of India or its northeastern region that is held by its citizens.
During his address, the Minister acknowledged the government’s proactive measures to tackle the root causes of the discord in Manipur. This included the controversial suspension of the previously unrestricted border policy with Myanmar, a decision made in light of border security concerns.
Mr. Jaishankar also reflected on the broader Northeastern development agenda, pointing out significant strides made over the past decade to enhance regional connectivity and economic growth. He cited various infrastructure projects aimed at improving links with neighboring countries like Bangladesh and Bhutan, through expanded rail, road, and waterway networks.
Additionally, Mr. Jaishankar mentioned the recent approval of semiconductor manufacturing projects in Assam, highlighting the government’s ambition to foster high-tech production and economic progress in the Northeast.
As Minister Jaishankar proceeds with his diplomatic engagements in South Korea and Japan, his comments on the Manipur situation underscore India’s steadfast resolve to confront the underlying factors of conflict and foster a climate of peace, stability, and development in the Northeast.
With the collective hopes of the Indian people set on reestablishing tranquility in Manipur, the government maintains an unwavering commitment to resolving the deep-seated issues. The pledge is to guide Manipur toward a future marked by harmony and prosperity for its citizens—a future where the state’s picturesque beauty is matched by the peace within its borders.
